"What I think ... Rust will NOT be breathing by the time final credits roll ... For a non-religious man who keeps a cruxifix in his apatment ... he's going to be the "Savior" / sacrificial lamb... in the opening credits... the imagery... Marty's face is superimposed over images of the highway / concrete... dense/cold/hard-headed...
Rust is shown with the burning cane-field... so hes the sacrifice?... the avenging angel burning both wheat & chaff??? ... and as he said - he lacks the courage for suicide... so he has no regards for his own life - but he's probably willing to sacrifice his own?... of course it will be CONTRARY to what we want (to save one of the Hart-girls)... probably he'll die saving Marty!

The whole thing with the images...
After the fight - in the Capt's office...Rust sitting in profile right side of face - not marked... he turns .. left side all bloody / scarred... clean/dirty good/evil
the tail-light... to symbolize the "break" between Marty-Rust... that hasn't been fixed in 10 yrs...(BUT it STILL WORKS)...
So Batman & Robin... Lone Ranger-Tonto get back together to "take down" the bad guys...
look we're still broken but can work together to get to the end."

Marty's kids, ex-wife, and ex-FIL are not involved.

Lawnmower man is obviously part of the cult, but he isn't the ring leader.

Rust will get strung up and murdered by the cult in episode 8. Note the line in the first episode about how he keeps a crucifix because he meditates on the idea of what it takes to sacrifice yourself for a cause, not because he is a Christian. Note how the bodies have been found in the last few years. It's been heading this way ever since the very beginning.

Rust is behind it all. His real name is Roger Childress-Ledoux. The real Rust Cohle actually dies in the DEA shootout, and "Rust" assumed his identity to get into LSP (notice that Childress just sucked it up when Rust slapped the frick out of him in the PD early in the series...he knows who's in charge). He iced Tuttle bc he got sloppy, then he took the evidence and gave Marty shitty latex gloves that would impart fingerprints. Now he's "hired" Marty's firm and - guess what - moved all of the evidence, including pitcures and videotapes that noone other than someone "involved" would have into Marty's office! I also think he's now going to redo the storage unit to make it look like he was building a case against Marty the whole time - genius.

Rust has been on the long con since the 80s because he was jealous of Marty's baseball career (Rust was clearly a bookish nerd in high school), so he fricked his wife, drove them into divorce (is probably turning out his daughters) and is going to have his cousin acid-face torture and kill him and frame Marty for it all. Sacrificing himself for a cause, you might say.
