Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns

Has anyone played this? I'm thinking about picking it up.
Any FF fans want to weigh in on it?
I played FF XIII until the save file corrupted on me. Outside the crappy characters and subpar storyline, I didn't mind it.

Not yet. Does it really matter? I figure that story continuity would be affected, but is it that big of a deal?

XIII-2 had a lot of the story in it. It is not necessary to play before LR, but you will be lost on things for a little while if you dont play it. Not that any of the plot is too hard to pick up on if you jump straight into LR, but i would play XIII-2 first.

Thanks. I'll do that.
How about gameplay? Any improvements over the first one?

i don't remember the first one in great detail, but its about the same. same(ish) battle system which i really like.

I'm pretty sure they recap you on what's happening. LR is more of an action RPG, so if you like that type of combat, you'll like it.
This ain't close. They've made a ton of changes to a X-2 dressphere-esque system with complete control of one character in an action system.

its still the paradigm shite though.

So, for XIII-2, do I have to interact with the shitty characters from the first one on a regular basis?
If I have to fight with Hope, I might just have a stroke.

Some not all. Sarah and Hope are the main characters from XIII but others are in there as well. If you don't play XIII-2, lighting returns will ruin the ending.
I enjoy the game a lot but I am a fan of the whole XIII series.

I played all 3. 13 had the best story and they progressively got worse, whereas the gameplay got more fun. I really enjoyed all 3 alot though.

Define "fun" as you've used it here. Is this like Mass Effect, where the story just goes to hell by game #3, but the actual game/combat mechanics and presentation are the best of the series?
I am into the first non-linear part of 13 (chapter 11, I think) and fun-factor of the actual battles is taking a nosedive for me. I was cruising along just fine until I hit the mid-level boss in the last chapter, and since then I am struggling to beat basically any enemy I come across. It's like the steady learning curve suddenly turned into a fricking cliff. This is my first jrpg, so it wouldn't surprise me if I am missing something obvious in terms of character progression or kit modification.

That gif literally causes my head to hurt.

Really not sure what to take from that gif - you don't agree with that assessment of ME3?

You have more control over battles in my opinion as the series goes on. 13-2 you can capture different wild creatures and use them in your party in any way it suits you. In 13-3, you acquire different outfits, weapons, shields, powers, etc. You can mix and match anyway you see fit. It offers a huge deal of customization which is great.
Now if you care about story and thats the main reason, do not play 13-3, but if you enjoy the mechanics and gameplay it will be a blast for you.
Only wish in 13-3 you had a second party member at all times, but that would make parts of the game a bit too easy.

You haven't been around very long I see...

That's encouraging - my biggest gripe with the whole "battle system" concept in 13 is feeling like I know what needs to be done to win a battle but not knowing how to make my party members do it.

No. Was hoping it was a "lost in GB translation" situation.
