What trees plays the biggest part. If they are a goldmine, someone would pay you. With only 5 acres, you are just gonna have to give them away(if they are worth anything), or pay a guy with an excavator or dozer to get rid of them FWIW, unless they are magical trees, you aren't gonna get a logger to even drive down your road I am a former forester and wouldn't bother with it at all. Only reason I'd stop by would be to see if you knew anyone with a bigger chunk of property
I have a square ten acre tract on my property with what appears to be approximately 20 year old loblolly pines planted every 10 feet. The pines were planted well before I bought the property 10 years ago. I haven't done the math , but I'm guessing there are 800-900 of them. I've considered having it clear cut. Am I in the same situation as the op where it's as likely to cost money as it is to make anything?

Really depends on who does it. Some people charge $200/day and some charge $500/day. One good guy with a big D5 should be able to get it done in a week.

Now that's a much better scenario. You will make money on that. FIL just cut 30 in oak grove and got a 40k check. 18" pines.

Any reason to clear cut it? Your best bet would be to find a few foresters in the area and see if they have anyone near that they need to work. They can be in touch with guys that do dozer work in a few minutes. At 10ac, I wouldn't worry about the money. Probably insignificant. Just moving an operation 20mi costs over $1500.
We put shitty, slow loggers on 20ac before just to keep them working. We didn't make any money at all on that property. It all went to the loggers because they were obviously broke dicks
I can go on and on about the costs and factors, but IMHO, get a chainsaw, a tractor, and thin it out yourself. It would be fun, maybe good work for your kids, and you wouldn't end up with an industrial park for a yard

See if you can find a guys that owns his own shite, a small operator maybe cut the trees with chainsaws and get them sold as pulpwood or whatever brings the most money. Get you an account with a saw mill and basically, manage it yourself. You would have to monitor the cutting and how many loads you get out. Settle up with the mill and pay your loggers.

No reason to clear cut and would only do it for a pay day. Some extra pasture would be nice, but not necessarily needed. Sounds like it would be more trouble than its worth in my particular case.

You are getting some shaky advise. I got the same "your gonna have to pay me" to cut pine off my property. I called a few mills and got names of people that do small track's of pine, I got $4,000 for one 3 acres plot and $5,500 for another 6 acre parcel.
But before I called a mill everyone told me the same shite about them being worthless.

Right now, everyone is cutting pine trees because it is too wet to cut most hardwood areas.
You absolutely cannot give advice on his situation because you have no idea the obstacles involved. You got lucky you didn't get robbed. Who knows, your shite could've been poles? His could be squirrelly pulpwood that actually isn't 18"
