No, I don't think they ruled it the same way as that. It was more along the lines of an OF catching a ball, thinking it is the third out when it's really the second out and flipping it in the stands. That ball is live. Not sure exactly what moment the play officially came to an end, but the coach just kind of walked towards home plate with the ball still in his hand.

i would love to have a recording of the argument the coach was making.... he seemed awfully sure of himself.. showing the ball to the ump and getting pissed that they didn't agree.

Is the play not dead when the fan touches it?

I remember when Larry Walker threw a ball in the stands and he tried to get it back.
