Louisiana has the same thing.

I thought about getting one because I am eligible to join the SCV since I am a direct descendant of one.

That Louisiana example is not the same at all since it doesn't have the battle flag as the background for the whole plate. You could argue that that SCV logo is just like any other club or interest that has their own plate. The full sized flag as a background is too much.

Why would anybody want to display this fact when you know it would rub at least 33% of people who see it the wrong way?

It's not like it's anything to be proud of anyway - "hooray my great great great great great grandfather father fought in a war that he lost".

And what would you get personally out of such a display? Would it add meaning to your life? Are you so insecure that you must project some outward silliness to the rest of the world?
