If he gets tagged he supposedly with his agent will immediately file a grievance to move his tag from TE money to WR money and try to get the most he can out of the Saints

It will get interesting. Jermicheal Finely would have received WR money had he been tagged a couple of years ago, but I don't remember the exact percentages of him lining up as a WR, I seem to remember something in the 70-80% range, but it's foggy at best.

What % of TEs are starting to line up in the slot or at WR more often? A couple guys at NE, Graham, Tony Gonzales, TE at Cleveland, etc.

NE never had a TE who was in the slot more often then on the end of the line.

Considering he lines up at WR more than TE, it's fair IMO.

LOL

He is a tight end.

In 10 to 15 years, I think you will see a couple of more positions become standard. The "Move" TEs will probably get their own classification, as will slot WRs and slot corner backs.

Maybe so, but right now he's a TE. He should be one of (if not the) highest paid TE in the game. But he should not be paid like a top 5 WR. Just like a starting LG shouldn't be paid like a top LT. And I'm not saying you think he should be paid like a WR - I'm just saying to the people in here who think it's "fair" if he gets top 5 WR money.

I think it's fair that he argues, and if the NFL decided he was a WR it wouldn't bother me, but honestly I find it interesting more than anything else.

Fwiw, I argued Aaron Hernandez was a WR, until he started murdering people.

gronk had a far superior season and never once moaned about being the highest paid tight end. i'm disappointed in jimmy.

Gronk is making 10 mil. If Graham gets tagged as a TE, he'll make something like 6 mil. If he gets tagged as a WR he'll make 10 mil.

I'd be mad at my agent if he left 4 mil on the table without argument. And if the Saints have a problem with paying his a WR then maybe they shouldn't play him as one a majority of the time.

Well Graham was like 15th in the league in receiving so his stats don't indicate he deserves top 5 WR money.

Thats not how the tag works.

You could franchise tag a damn practice squad WR and the cost of this tag would be the average of the top 5 highest paid WRs in the league. Production is irrelevant in that sense

How often does Gronkowski, V Davis, J. Witten, Gonzalez, and Jared Cook line up out wide?

Gronk rarely does outside of the redzone a few times a game

FWIW...I am not baiting here for an answer I want. I am just curious.

The labor deal requires that the franchise player be tendered at the position “at which [he] participated in the most plays during the prior League Year.”

quote:

So it’s not “ludicrous” that there’s a discussion, because Graham lined up tight to the tackle only one third of the time in 2013, according to Pro Football Focus. It’s also not ludicrous because the Packers and tight end Jermichael Finley started down this road in 2012, with the Packers ultimately unwilling to roll the dice in the grievance process, instead striking a two-year deal with Finley while the challenge to his designation as a tight end was looming. If the argument was ludicrous, the Packers surely would have held firm.

quote:

It’s likewise not ludicrous because the Titans opted not to even tag tight end Jared Cook last year, for fear that: (1) he’d file a grievance; (2) he’d opt to not settle it; (3) he’d win; and (4) the Titans would be stuck paying him an eight-figure salary for 2013.

Gonzalez and Graham were 65% this year. No one else was close per ESPN. Gonzalez was only that high because Julio and Roddy were hurt.

I think that at the end of the day, that's the kind of money that Graham and his agent want. As of right now, their only leverage is to try this ploy, which will fail.

In the long term, it's better for both Graham and the Saints to agree to a long term deal. Right now is just posturing time, and the media love making mountains out of molehills.

I agree with your entire post. Except that it will fail. CBA is clear.

No. The franchise tag number for a WR is 11.6 million. Pretty big difference.

Perhaps it may succeed, but who knows because the Saints have not yet tagged him, which means that they are still negotiating.

If that's the case, the saints should let him go. He's nothing but a slower colston.
