Sports wise not franchise wise.
The gretzky trade expanded the interest of hockey in previously non hockey markets like LA, Florida, Texas, etc.

Not sure the Ruth trade changed MLB like this one changed the face of the NHL.
It only took the Red Sox 86 years to win another World Series.

Ruth

In Montreal & Toronto, yes. Elsewhere, not really.

I wonder if the current markets would be as successful minus this trade. Gretzky says he probably could have won 4 more cups with Edmonton. 8 cups? redonkulus.

Surprised no one has mentioned Herschel Walker to Minnesota
Dallas got a couple superbowls out of that deal.

Nelson Riis, a member of Parliament from British Columbia, urged the Canadian government to intervene and stop the trade. His plan? The government buys Gretzky from the Kings and then sells him to a Canadian team. That’s something not even the KHL dabbles in …
Said Riis: “The Edmonton Oilers without Wayne Gretzky is like apple pie without ice cream, like winter without snow, like the Wheel of Fortune without Vanna White - it's quite simply unthinkable.”

In a far greater sport (USA and World Wide) and was the start of the greatest American sports franchise of all time.
Gretzky also didn't win a single Stanley Cup after his trade. Ruth won 7.

I disagree... Detroit and Chicago were a hotbed of Hockey even back in the day....
Ever heard of Bobby Orr?????

You were spot on when you said 99 spurred the growth of hockey in the US, particularly in markets that you would never thought professional hockey would be played in.

Well you said Hockey wasn't popular inside the USA... Now Wayne made it more popular... BUT there were many teams and a REAL Hockey fanbase in the USA even before Wayne....

Were games a constant sellout in NYC, Boston, Chicago, & Detroit? Did they have big time TV deals? Did they receive nation wide media coverage?
