as a June cut I'd say he's near the top of list.
He's a good guy. Just not a $6mil a yr producer IMO. With the June cuts bargaining power I could see him taking a pay cut to stay.
Hicks and Jenkins have nothing but upside in front of them. Tyrunn Walker has shown some spark in his limited reps too. Health was the bigger concern in 2013. He was on the Injury Report the first 11 weeks of the season.

An interesting note on Walker: according to PFF he had the third highest pass rush grade on the team. I think if he can stay healthy and continue to improve, he's going to become a very key part to the d-line rotation.

All this site has taught me is that Loomis is a genius to understand all this crap, manage it well, and put a winner out on the field year after year. Incredible.

the purpose of this post! It is quite daunting to approach all the details. I love talking about getting or cutting player X as to performance and scheme fit. Unfortunately the whole capology aspect is just as vital in evaluating. It's not fun but is necessary for us to do our armchair GM-ing here

Very important. Like do you think you can get a starting corner with the money you save cutting Greer? And do you just cut him or designate him a June 1st cut?
What about Harper? Can we get another safety/linebacker hybrid as good for how much we save cutting him?
And all the people wanting to cut Moore and/or Colston. Do we have true in house replacements and if not do we save enough cutting them(Colston has to be a June 1st cut) to get another guy or two that is a legit starter?
A lot of what happens is dependent on what the contracts and cap looks like.

I didn't realize how much bank Morstead was pulling until I looked at 2018

Alright since I never got a chance to do some mocks before the cuts, I played around some more and we are still perfectly fine this season even considering the looming Graham contract.
Depending on how much future we want to mortgage(and being at least somewhat realistic), we can have $25.3 mil in cap space this season by fully restructuring Brees, Evans, Grubbs, and Colston and June 1st cutting Bunkley.
That's a frick ton of cap room. But it leaves us at $6.2 mil under the cap next year without Graham and whatever other free agent contracts we sign not factored in yet.
It's not a horrible spot especially considering we can restructure Drew again next year and save around $9 mil I believe(but we could also extend him to save even more).
So really the next 2 years we have lots of options to consider to be able to get almost anyone we want, especially when you consider that there are other guys we can cut to save space for guys we want more.
I might do some more tinkering and post the results that are likely more in line with what will happen.

Here's a just for instance realistic scenario:
Restructure Evans and Colston fully(Colston has guaranteed money anyway and I'd prefer to keep him over Grubbs if it came down to it) and June 1st cut Bunkley and we now have $15.3 mil in cap space this year, while still having $11.2 mil next year.
If you do Grubbs instead of Colston it's very similar($15.6 mil this year and $11 mil next year).
Then looking at next year, if you June 1st cut Lofton we save $7 mil, with $2 mil dead money. Hawthorne as a June 1st cut would save $4.5 mil, with $1.5 mil in dead money.
Moore may stick around this season, untouched or not, but next year he is definitely going to have to take a pay cut or get cut. He saves $4.3 mil, with $1.3 mil dead money

11.5mil is no small amount.
Perhaps the FO will tip their hand a bit if we see ILBers being stocked up.

I'd rather not restructure the older fellas. I know it would be nice to put off Brees until next season, but I'd rather he be more difficult to cut than Colston/Grubbs/Evans. We did Evans, Grubbs, Colston, and Hawthorne last year and the latter definitely is biting us in the arse. Grubbs and Colston arguably are as well, though I definitely wouldn't consider cutting Grubbs this season even he hadn't restructured last season. Getting out of Colston's $5.5m base salary would be somewhat enticing if we drafted a guy like Benjamin in the first round, though he did play well late (507 yards, 4 TDs in final 6 games).

Fortunately, LB is arguably the easiest position to transfer from college to the NFL. Plus, ILB isn't that important position. Lofton was subpar and Hawthorne was bad last season, yet we still had a top 5 defense. Though it would be awesome to have a guy like Mosley in the middle.

Yeah if you add my scenario that gives us $11.2 mil and add in the $11.5 mil that should at least cover anyone we sign this season with some money likely left over.
Add in at least another $9 mil by restructuring Brees next year(more if extended) and we can actually sign a top tier guy.
We really aren't as bad off as it seems on the surface. There are many ways to get room. Of course it comes at the cost of losing guys sometimes, but then you have to ask if you'd rather player x or player y at x price.
Honestly I'm starting to think we may make a run a at least a tier 2 starting corner this year, if not a tier 1 guy depending on how much we push.

If you're going off of a website's projections, it most certainly doesn't include Jordan's team option. Don't feel like figuring out the exact number now, but $7m is a good estimate.

the latter definitely is biting us in the arse.
And he certainly is still cuttable this year if we really wanted to go elsewhere. As a June 1st cut he saves $2 mil with only $1.5 mil in dead money.
Plus it's ALWAYS going to be only the older guys that this is an option with because the younger guys are on cheap contracts, and when they sign their big contracts the numbers are low in the first few years until they get to about 30ish.
So the only guys we can restructure are the older guys and we need the cap room so it will happen(unless we cut them or they take a pay cut).
Evans is sticking around so he's almost a sure bet to get a restructure, while I think Colston and Grubbs are each 50/50.
If you do Brees this year that's that much less you save next year when we need to redo him so it doesn't make sense to do him this year unless you want to sign a bunch of free agents or some top tier guys.
Plus, even with restructures, we still have the option to June 1st cut Evans, Grubbs, and/or Colston next year and still save a pretty penny.
So really if we need the money we are either going to cut or restructure these guys(they aren't in a weak position to take pay cuts). Both save you money, but one loses you the player. So ask yourself what you'd rather for each one this year.

Yeah I know. But he's our biggest free agent by far next year and he'll be relatively cheap compared to what he should be making.
Nobody else(save for Butler if he blows up) is going to be making anything to dent the rest of that.
So even with Jordan back we'd still be under the cap with plenty of options to make more room.

He's still more expensive to cut in terms of dead money. Looking into the specifics, they did only convert his $3m roster bonus into a signing bonus, so it's not as much money as I suspected. Unfortunately he's cheaper to keep than cut until his final season. Hopefully he goes back to his Seattle days and it becomes a moot point. He definitely had some really good games last season.

He's 50/50 next season in savings to dead money straight cut, and especially when you consider the June 1st cut option where he becomes 3 to 1 he didn't kill us with his restructure in the least.
We needed the money then so we had to do it. And we need the money now and the only guys to really consider restructuring are Brees(who makes much more sense next year), Evans, Grubbs, and Colston.
Either that or making some other cuts like Bunkley, Moore, Sproles, and/or Thomas(nobody else saves enough to really be worth it besides Evans and he isn't getting cut). Likely have to do a combination of cuts and restructures anyway.
We can only designate 2 June 1st cuts and Bunkley is the primest of the prime candidates for that. Only other options are Moore, Harper, and Greer.
So what moves are you going to make? Keeping in mind we still have to make more room to tag Graham, sign at least Bush, Morgan, and Harris to their tenders, get another starting corner unless we are going to rely on an unknown rookie/White/PRob, figure out RT and C, and sign our rookies.

This is something to give you an idea of what we're working with.
Restructure
Evans
Colston
June 1st Cut
Bunkley
2nd Round RFA
Bush
Morgan
ERFA
Harris
Franchise
Graham
Resign
Strief(3 years/$12.5 mil; 1st year hit of $3.2 mil)
This gives us 53 players and $1.5 mil left in cap room. So we still have to make another move or two just to sign our rookies and unless we free up more money we can only sign vet minimum players from here on out.
We still lack a clear starting C and CB in this scenario. So what other moves do we make in this situation?
