I don't know if you've read Socrates, but my statement certainly wasn't Socratic.
I am very, very familiar with all of the 'Big 3' Greeks, philosophy was my minor to particle physics before I went into finance. I also said Psuedo-Socratic, basic Socratic would just be asking for clarity or probing of information. Regardless, the questioning of basic assumptions is the primary motivation.

The base state in nature is not centralized.
This is so untrue from every particle physics, chemical, and scientific standpoint its unreal. How can you possibly defend a statement like this.

I'm just gonna sit here and watch for a while.

You try way to hard to be a convincing liar.
Mt Gox has been abandoned, the community hasn't used the Gox price for at least 6 weeks now.
Are you calling wiki a liar? Or is he not part of the bitcoin "community"???
quote:It dropped $51 on bitstamp and $40 on btc-e.
(Bitstamp, BTC-e, et cetra) have only dropped $20-30.
Btw, it's 'too' not 'to.'

Mt Gox was never the gold standard. It has been hated in the community for years but was the only viable major exchange until last Spring. it was overtaken by Huobi on November and then a litany of other exchanges in December.

I think you are hoping for the same thing I am. It'll be akin to watching the zookeeper feed mice to the python.

The MtGox prices were all we heard quoted for years.
Joshie, you're just precious. That's all I can say.....

I feel cheated. Why would Wiki use it for his annual contest then?

Never mind that. Discounting the impacts of government itself is beyond obtuse. Usually, it's outright suicidal.
That's the main thing that the bitcoinistas are ignoring. They envision this endpoint where, at a minimum, hundreds of millions are demanding and trading in a decentralized currency and the leaders of the world just throw up their hands and go "Well...OK"

False dichotomy, I think Wiki should've used the Bitstamp or a index of prices as the exchange rate, but Mt Gox had been used for years so I can see why he chose that. Today it's really not accurate to cite the Gox price. It's been $100+ higher than all of the major exchanges with higher volumes since mid-December.
And regardless of the lows on Bitstamp and BTC-e (which are considerably higher than -$100 and are actually used to exchange fiat currencies for Bitcoin) it's still disengenious to make it seem like the drop on Gox has anything to do with bitcoin. They have stopped a ton of withdrawals in non-USD fiats. They are likely experiencing a run.

Josh is about to go to school. I'm just standing by the bus watching him leave for his first day.

Like when rap was introduced and music went to shite?
Is bitcoin the gangster rap of the currency world?

Did you even read Wiki's post?
Posted on 2/6/14 at 2:58 pm to joshnorris14
Not really. The government doesn't care if you rip off Metallica.
They get a little more invested when they're the ones getting screwed.

Yes.

I thought because of our non-laissez faire policies I sorta thought this was implied. Sorry about that.

Whatever value judgement you want to place on using cryptocurrencies is up to you

I even explained in that thread that I chose the MtGox price because it was the only exchange with sufficient volume throughout the entire year.
Don't waste your time with these guys that are trying to find "gotchas."

Well then you should have your answer on why he used the Mt Gox price because he explicitily stated himself and the explanation lines right up with my post.
