Yeah, I chose normal as well and I think it was the right choice. I had to try a couple times in a few spots, but I think I would have gotten really frustrated if it was on a harder setting and had to retry a million times.
Like you said, it would ruin the scariness.

I've about got it beat, I'm in the Female Ward putting in the 3 fuses into the laundry chute thing.
Awesome game though, scary as hell but very very fun and well developed.
