Not shooting a buck smaller than one you've already killed isn't a new concept or exactly herd management. Like I said though. I've done the same and won't judge the guy.
I will judge him for using dogs. I have no respect for anyone that shoots a deer while running dogs. Congrats on hitting a moving target with a scatter gun

Blasphemy!
But I do realize dog hunting will be history eventually.

Dammit boy, you need to realize that all dog hunters don't shoot everything that moves. I don't hunt with them, and they screw me up sometimes. Sometimes they help me. But I sure as hell won't crucify someone for doing what they like within the legal limits of the law. Next time y'all have a convict get loose I want you to tell your buddies not to let the K9 loose on him, because that would take the sport out of it. Dogs are tools. Some people need more tools than others. That doesn't make it wrong. I don't agree with a man sticking himself inside another man, and I'll vote against it if it ever came up on the ballot, but I sure as hell won't cut his pecker off so he can't do it anymore. Relax and worry about your own self. If a dog comes onto your place go ahead and get mad, but it won't help a damn thing. Life is too short to get pissed off about stuff like that.

We don't dog hunt anymore because it makes it very hard to manage a herd and other reasons, but there is nothing unethical about hunting deer with dogs. Why is it OK to hunt rabbits, birds , coons or squirrels with dogs but not deer?
Also keep in mind that many hunters think it is unethical to hunt deer over bait or even food plots, so don't be too quick to be judgmental about how others hunt.
