Ill be in NM in late march for a week and I would like to hunt while I'm there. The only season open is cougar and the tag is 290 for two cougars. Anyone have any experience or advice?

I would be using a rifle and have a sidearm for protection. I don't think it would be a problem. Have you done this before?

Too dangerous. They'll hunt you and you won't even know they are around.

Friend of mine was living in Montana. He was bowhunting elk one day and he had this weird sense something was watching him, and caught sight of a cougar. For two hours, this thing stalked him. Said it was the most unsettling thing that had ever happened to him.

Hunting cougars is essentially impossible without hounds to tree them for you. So you'll need an outfitter and that will cost anywhere from $4,000-5,000. Taking two will cost far more. It's also worth pointing out that success rates on big mature toms can be pretty low. No outfitter that I'm aware of has a 100% success rate. If their honest its probably closer to 50% in some areas. The hunt consists of following dogs thru mountainous terrain and shooting a cat out of a tree much like a squirrel off a bird feeder.

It's an expensive coon hunt.

Answer me this? Why would you kill something just to watch it die? You can't eat a damn cat unless you own a thai diner or restaurant correct? Just wondering? I'm an old time hunter and can't stand to kill anything or see an animal taken unless I'm gonna eat it! Just me, i know i'm old timey but damn! I just can't see it. Flame away you young whiper snappers

My dad went on a cougar hunt on Canada around thanksgiving. He has a friend from Edmunton sp? Who is an outfitter and taxidermist. His favorite thing to hunt is cats.
Dad shot a 180lb tom. The Canadian raved about how good the meat is. Dad said he was pretty hesitant, but he ate it and said it was great.
Would have never thought about eating a cat.

Long time ago I shot an albino possum and brought it home to show my Dad. He gave me an arse chewing for shooting an animal that we would not eat. Have followed that rule for many years. Of course now, I just punch holes in paper. Nothing to clean or cook.

Yeah, if they are over populated and threatening other species, then fine, but shooting an animal just for sport is chicken shite. I am not down with African safaris either. Watched an elephant hunt on TV once... Was about the saddest and least sporting thing I have ever seen.

I'm an old timey also and agree with you for the most part. That being said who says you can't eat cougar. I grew up in hunting in So. California and you could shoot them then. Now they are protected and have no fear of man. The population needs to be kept in check.
I've eaten bear meat and it was delicious....

I'd be freaking out if I only had a bow... Especially when I can't shoot one for shite.
