Aminu

I've been back and forth with Aminu. There are games that I don't understand why he's in the league, but other times thinking to myself, "this dude ain't that bad". Yes, his shot needs work. Some shots should need clearance from the FAA. Yes, I scream when I see him pull up from 20.
After watching him for 2+ years, seeing the good and the bad, I'm ready to embrace this dude as a solid player/contributor to the Pels. He's a solid/borderline excellent defender that's versatile enough to guard multiple positions. We know what were getting on the defensive end with him, and I'm ready to give him the starting 3/backup 4 position. Heck, he can even guard bigger slower 2's for a spell. He's a rebounding machine.
Props to this coaching staff for developing and trusting Aminu. If it were me running this team, I'd be happy with giving him the SF position and focus on a starting 5 who plays closer to the basket. (Anthony Davis is not and won't reach his potential playing center). If that means moving Anderson, so be it.

Absolutely agree.

I'm not quite there. But I like him.

When healthy, we have enough scorers. We need him for defense and rebounding. I also love the way he runs the floor on the break. He jumps effortlessly. Like a younger G-Money.

You know, that's a funny coincidence.
I swear it seems as if Jrue directly lifted his crossover move from mine when I was in high school. Not quite as quick, but he's pretty good.

As long as he is a contributor getting 26 minutes a game, the Pelicans will not be a good team.

I like Aminu his energy and effort. You need a guy like him on your team.
The more he understands his role the better he will be

Aminu gets another incomplete for me, but an intriguing incomplete. He's improved enough that I want to see if he can keep improving. I'd still look for an upgrade first though like we did last year and only make an offer if I have to settle.

I like him as a "Bench Player" - but could be an 7th/8th man on a championship team if he keeps improving. You just can't start a player with 0 offensive game and have a good team in the NBA.

I guess it's contingent on moving Gordon's contract?
To me the focus should be getting a center. I don't want Davis playing center. He's not a center.
Aminu has improved enough, that if he stays within his role as a defender/rebounder, he can contribute enough to where an upgrade isn't a pertinent as I thought. To me, he's the most improved of Monty's tenure. Not that's he's ready to be an all star, but to be a cohesive part of a unit.

We'd still have the MLE in play with Gordon on the roster. They didn't resign Aminu this season until they failed to sign Martell Webster if I remember the timeline correctly, so it doesn't have to be a Luol Deng level upgrade to push Aminu to the back of the line. I know there's likely bridge buring involved in this specific example, but if you could choose between Ariza and Aminu, assuming Ariza's new 3 point prowess is legit and he's still the same defender he was, who would you pick? I'd go with Ariza. What you give up in rebounding you more than make up in better defense and offense.

Yes, I'd pick Ariza.
I always thought we needed a 3 that could score. Now I look at it differently. Scoring isn't a problem i.e. AD, EG, Tyreke, Ryno, Jrue. We need that Dennis Rodman type role( no, I'm not comparing Aminu to The Worm).
Now if we could get us a Wilson Chandler in the offseason, I'm down.

Yep, I'd have to go with Ariza as much as I appreciate Aminu's improvement.
Ariza and Okafor were two guys who were overpaid and asked to do too much, imo. But both are/were valuable players.

I take Aminu because of his rebounding every time. On a team that has exactly one good rebounder out of the big man rotation, Aminu's skills there are vital. They move for a better frontline, Aminu becomes expendable
Again, the roster and its deployment just don't fit together. This is a small ball roster that needs Davis to play “center." In games, they do everything they can to avoid putting Davis at “center."
I certainly disagree with the idea that Davis is not and will not ever be a “center." I just have no idea how to parse what the team thinks.

I think signing Ajinca says they feel the need for at least a part time "starter" at center in the short term. Tyreke was seen as a massive talent upgrade over Robin Lopez that you couldn't pass up, and the available replacement options for Lopez were pretty rough. Think about the center market we were dealing with. We paid Stiemsma twice the minimum after getting into a bidding war over a center that hasn't played in forever.

That's disgustingly true.
I know AD is still young and maturing, but I don't think he has the body type to play center for 82 games. He bulked up 15 pounds or so during the offseason, but it looks like during the course of the season so far, he's lost it. Idk, I could be wrong. To me he looks better suited to be a slasher/midrange type player, not a traditional center.

I like Evans. But it is a weird move if they were willing to dump Lopez and they knew they didn't want Davis banging 5s considering the options available.
Maybe they had too much faith in their ability to coax average play out of Smiht and Steimsma. Despite the hysteria here, Oden was always a long term investment.
If I thought Monty had even a touch of basketball iconoclasm, I would say they still intend to put Davis at “center." They just aren't ready yet.

This is the rub. He isnt traditional. He is a paradigm changer.
What do centers do? Control the paint on both ends. Davis can do that. He can also do nearly anything else on the court.
Completely agree that he isn't ready to bang every night (HI YO) right now. But that will change in time.
