Interesting. That area would be fairly easy to gentrify...backing up to a levee and being sandwiched between LSU and downtown. I knew developers were quietly buying a lot of parcels in that area.

Yep. And that's why the streetcar makes perfect sense when/if these come to fruition.

The Water Campus is supposed to be built along that same section of Nicholson, but a bit closer to downtown. The two developments would greatly improve that whole section between LSU and downtown, which has been a huge waste of prime real estate for too long, IMO.

This could be a huge boost for D-Town if planned accordingly. I would like to see all that open area between Garfield and Oklahoma on the west side of Nicholson turn into high end row houses.
This would give BR a new look and would be a positive step in gentrifying that area.

The Nicholson Gateway plan at LSU looked very nice. I suppose that, combined with the Water/coastal research place may encourage the other development. I can see how that would justify a street car outside of LSU football games. I hope they time the traffic lights around the trains.
Those apartments on campus along Nicholson are pretty crappy. Glad they are replacing them.

I would absolutely love to start implementing more streetcars/trams and phasing cars out. While the auto industry would never let this happen, it would be awesome.

I'm not familiar with those costs....is that high relative to what other cities pay?
I suppose it's for the rail line, trains, passenger platforms, and servicing infrastructure. I imagine it could be expanded for less than what it costs to actually acquire the trains and start a new service?

There is already bus service. Other than for students going to downtown bars, it's useless.

Remember that the cost includes buying the land. After the local politicians buy up all the lots right before the project and then resell them to the government that will be a big part of the cost. I would approve of this though. Now that Tigerland is becoming a warzone I would prefer the LSU kids get sent downtown and they won't have to drive this way.

As others have said, they are trying to build up the area on Nicholson between LSU and Downtown. If you look at what's going on down the Nicholson corridor, as well as the redevelopment of downtown BTR, it makes sense to have a link. And if the Feds are gonna pick up 80% of the tab, it makes that much more sense.
Maybe they also plan on extending it further down Nicholson to the other side of LSU all the way to Tigerland and Brightside eventually? Would be pretty cool if they had a line running down Brightside meet up with the Nicholson line so you could get downtown from all those areas. Pipe dream I know. To bad a lot of the streets in South BR are far too narrow to facilitate an extensive expansion of this system.
Not to mention that the benefit on gamedays that people have mentioned of being able to park miles away from the traffic and stroll up to the stadium.

It would be nice if LSU finally got a centralized bar, restaurant scene like so many other campuses have. We really lack in this area and probably will for a long time. Maybe we finally get lucky and this area becomes something. Don't have the hopes up.

Can't you take a CATS bus to a 'bar' scene downtown? We are already paying for the CATS bus via a tax. If it's a student deal, then let's charge each student a $250 fee to pay for this cool idea.
