There are a LOT of people in the US who want this.

Right. So the question is based on a false premise. It's usually the same camp that is for wealth distribution here that is for increasing foreign AID in 3rd world countries.

I don't mind foreign AID but I think we need to be smarter about how we go about it to try to maximize impact.

It is a false premise.
But there is the larger issue of 'myth of the other' that comes into play.

Example: You read an article about a plane that crashed in Oregon last night during a storm. 30 people died. Some were women and children.

Then, you turn the page and read another article. 100 people drowned when a ferry sank in Ethiopia. It was overloaded and leaky.

American readers will be much more upset with the former story than the latter. We think 'Hell, people in the 3rd world die from stupid crap every day'.
We relate to those in our own country.

Indeed.

That false premise concludes the wealthy who redistribute to less fortunate US citizens are greedy.

Meanwhile recipients of that redistribution, who do not in turn give any of their money to the world's far less fortunate people, are not considered greedy.
