re: Anyone Own a Subaru?

I had a '98 Outback and currently have an '02 WRX. Subarus rock.
Comments:
1. Poor gas mileage compared to the competition.
2. Both cars were manual. First gear synchro wore out fast, but they supposedly fixed this in 2005. Both cars developed clutch vibration early, but on the WRX it was replaced under warranty and I've gone over 100K on the second clutch and it's still good.
3. Like all AWD cars they use open diffs (I think the WRX has a LSD on one axle). Great for snowy roads but it won't get you out of every jam. I got stuck once in the Outback where I would not have gotten stuck if I had the ability to lock the diffs.
4. I gave my Outback to my brother, and at about 120K, he needed to replace a wheel bearing, but otherwise it was reliable.
5. At around 120K on my WRX the driver power window motor mount came loose and when I took it to my mechanic to fix it and get a service, he said the head gaskets needed to be replaced, and that it's common for boxer engines (horizontal heads) to burn out the head gaskets. That's been my only unexpected surprise expense.
Those are the only issues I've had. If you ever drive on snowy roads or dirt roads, Subarus are great. If you don't, then it's just whether you like the styling. For the non-turbo Subarus, there are many alternatives, but if the model you want has a turbo available, then it will be a fun car (I think the Forrester is/was available with the turbo) with not much competition.

I drive an Outback. After I hit 500,000 miles, I'll buy another one.

Subaru = NPR listener, birkenstocks and grooming issues. Thought this was common knowledge?

Go to Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, they are so common it attracts your attention when see any other brand of car.

I have a Forester and it is a great car. I will probably only buy Subaru's from now on. The Subaru dealership in Baton Rouge is pretty awesome as well. The people were really helpful.

The wife might be in the market for a new car and Subaru seems to be a great buy and a highly rated.
We are looking at the XV Crosstrek btw.
I bought a Subaru last August. I like it.

Owned a 2005 Forester XT (turbo). We loved it, but at 90K miles, it just started to break down. During our last year of ownership I had to replace the radiator and power steering pump, the turbocharger burned up, the cd changer broke, and the sunroof stopped working. Along with a couple of other minor problems, I had to spend $7K that year just get it in condition to sell it.
I ran full synthetic and took it in for maintenance regularly. I recommend a Honda. My wife and I have owned four and have never had a problem before 150K, and then only on components you expect to wear out.

This, my mom just bought one of their SUVs. The service she received has been phenomenal. Her car gets terrific gas mileage and is a very comfortable ride. Has almost a car feel to it sometimes.
Con: It is pretty loud

Daughter ran one through the Arizona desert at 110 mph in 110* heat for an hour and broke a connecting rod. Bought an Empreza for her at Subaru of Tucson. New job gave her a company car so the Empreza is a back up car for me
I like it

Great reliable cars. They're very popular in Colorado. I wanted the wife to buy one last purchase.

Subarus are tough. I own a shop and if everybody drove Subarus I'd be out of business.

If I didn't need a truck, I would love to drive a 5 door WRX STi.

Yeah, I own an outback and really like it. I looked it up on bluebook the other day and was shocked it had held its value as well as it had. As others have said, its great in bad weather. I've never felt any slippage in rain.

How loud is it? Everyone keeps saying they are loud, what does that mean? Is it wind roar, motor noise, all of the above?
I went last night and looked a few after hours at the lot in BTR and saw several that look very nice.
