Any thoughts on this rifle? My son wants to buy an entry-level deer rifle (he sold a Tikka T3 last year), and doesn't want to break the bank.

Either one would be a great deer rifle. I'd bet money it will shoot minute-of-dead
Definitely two of the best caliber choices out there.

I've actually been looking at the American 30-06. I've watched a ton of youtube videos and read some reviews and articles on it. I've also talked to some of the people at local gun shops and they are all very high on this rifle.
I've been looking at rifles because I'm going to be buying one to get back into deer hunting and I have decided this is the rifle I am going to get.
Academy Sports has them listed on their site for 349.99 and when you add in a good leupold scope for 199.99 or even 299.99 you are looking at a good rifle for under 800.00.
Go hold one in your hands and see how it fits and what you think. It weighs in at 6 1/4 lbs so it's very light but the recoil pad seems to be a good one.
Tang safety, 3 lug bolt with a 70 degree bolt so it doesn't hit the scope. Bolt is also full diameter for easy round ejection while shouldering the gun. Flush mount 4 round rotary magazine/clip. Adjustable trigger from 3-5lbs and also sports a trigger safety similar to those on a glock. The barrel is free floating out of the box so you don't have to do that yourself and it comes standard with scope mounting bases so all you have to do is buy a scope and the mounting rings.
I think they took some ideas from Tikka and Savage and combined them to make this rifle. It's a cheap price but they didn't build it cheap. They built it to be affordable without sacrificing quality.
eta - one of the videos I watched had a guy shooting the 30-06 model with a Redfield scope. He was shooting 180 grain federal ammo and shot a 3 round grouping that was smaller than a quarter.

An absolute great entry level rifle. I bought one for little angus in 308 and we have had zero problems with it and it shoots dead on. The detachable magazine was the highest selling point for me. The magazine at first seemed to be cheaply made and was hard to click in loaded fully. After a few loadings though it has gotten easier. The rotary style magazine also makes it a little easier for young ones to load ( makes it easier to push the bullet in).

Bought the compact 308 for my daughters. They have no problem with it. Ages 16, 14 and 11.

This seems to be common among all Ruger products. I absolutely love their stuff.

Ruger makes good stuff in the US for decent prices. I've never had any complaint about the Ruger firearms I own.
I vote .30-06.

hijacking thread for a second.
I believe your a certified handgun trainer or something right? Speaking of Ruger, have you had any dealings with the Ruger SR40c? I currently own a Taurus 24/7 pro .40cal but would like to buy a conceal carry .40 so that I can keep all of my ammo the same. I've looked at this gun but haven't decided on it yet. You can shoot me an email at rolltidemj@gmail.com if you can give me some advice and if you want so we don't muck up this thread.
