Why the sudden exodus? Blame the new rookie wage scale, which rewards less money to first round draft picks and delays the big payout until a player’s second contract. That means the more time spent in the league, the better. A lot of these players want to get moving on proving themselves, even if they are a late round pick at the start.

LSU started it! Les has lost control of the CBA.

They all got 1st and 2nd round evals.

I've always wondered about this. I'm guessing they use numbers from the previous years to project how many will go. Still tough to get the right numbers.
As far as the high number, it makes sense with there not being a huge reward for improving draft stock. I'd be interested to see if any sports writer (or even economist) saw this coming when the new CBA came out.

Last year the record was 73... needless to say you should expect 80+ in the years to come

The biggest thing they could do to reduce the number of early entries is to get some sort of control over the sleazy agents. These kids have a decent bowl game, and there's blood in the water for the sharks. It's scary some of things these guys say to kids. I've seen way too many swayed too early. Some absolutely need to leave early (and some positions like RB almost demand it), but way too many get bad information.

I remember some arguing this would curb the number of early entries because there wouldn't be that huge payoff number.

Yeah, I can't remember specific examples but (like most things) I've seen it argued both ways.
Obviously, real life seems to be siding with the "just get me to the league and on my way to my second contract" theory.

Did Vinnie Sunseri comes to his senses and change his mind and not declare?

this still makes no sense to me. 92 players are basically 3 rounds themselves. the vast majority of these guys are going to be later round picks, and would have been under the old CBA. they're in no different position

in a world of logic, this would probably be true
there are 3 positions that can make a huge jump: QB, OT, and DE...and that was pretty much always true
it is still theoretically "worth it" for some of them to stay. it was never "worth it" for the late round guys to stay

But there is less incentive to come back another year to improve your draft stock

for just about all of these guys, that was true under the old CBA, too
