I know a Manning led 49ers would probably be destroying teams left and right.

Yeah. I think he would let him do some stuff but in the end he would get real frustrated with him changing every play called. Fox doesn't care and let's him do anything he wants. I think that was the a big motivator for him

he did let Luck call his own plays for almost the entirety of his senior season.
Jesus Christ this might be the least factually correct post in the history of tigerdroppings.
Luck left college after his RS Junior year. And Harbaugh wasn't even his coach that season.

You are so right. No excuses on my part. Too many drinks stretched this long day out. I think you know what I meant though. I have no idea what Coach Shaw allowed Luck to do, but Harbaugh allowed him to call his own plays during their last year together. Not the whole season, but for most of it.

The difference between Payton and Harbaugh was their predecessor. Mike Singletary was a defensive minded coach and he build his team Defense heavy. Jim can in and brought his offense to the fore while keeping that Defense. I.E perfect storm.
Payton had to rebuild his team from scratch and most of the players he inherited initially did not one to play outside of Joe Horn, Deuce and Gleason. The Saint rosters were a dumpster fire as the old guard had that mentality of losing in new orleans. You can't build around that, even Barry Sander quits the lion because he couldn't take losing anymore.
So..Payton is better. I would like to see Harbaugh go to Jacksonville and turn them into a powerhouse inside of a year.
John Fox however, I gotta give the man credit where credit is due, he did an amazing job at Miami.

Until recently, I would have said no. Right now though, I have to give him the edge. Too many times this year, I saw Payton outthink himself.
He did have some talent when he came to SF but Stanford was a mess when he took over there. They were coming off of a 1 - 11 season in 2006 and he lead them into the Coliseum and beat USC as a 41 point underdog the next season. That alone will always get him some respect from me.

He didn't get banned from the nfl and lose draft picks last year. Also, Payton had a title.

I say it's even. The 49ers are the saints pre huge Brees contract( so are the Seahawks). most of their money is not tied up in quarterback. They have big time expensive vet talent spread out through the whole team and a cheap QB. Wait till they have to pay those QB's.

Considering the teams both coaches inherited, it's Payton by a landslide.
