iPad. I have two kindles for my boys and I'm not really a fan. It works for their purposes of playing stupid games and what not, but it kinda sucks for the internet.

depends on what you're wanting to do with it.
i'm an amazon prime subscriber who wanted something to just watch movies w/ and look at twitter. something along those lines you can't beat kindle's price.
anything beyond that go w/ ipad.

I have a Nexus 10. Love it.
Biggest thing I recommend is if you have an iPhone get an iPad, if you have an Android, get a Nexus or a Galaxy Tab

Samsung Galaxy kicks the Kindle with its dick all day and night.

I have an original iPad and a Kindle Fire HD. It's pretty much a draw for me. The Kindle seems a little snappier, but overall the iPad is much more stable and easy to operate. My young kids use the Kindle, and it works fine for their purposes. If I were buying myself a new one, I'd likely go with a refurbished iPad.

I've had an iPad 2 for a couple of years and love it. Last year at Christmas we got a Kindle Fire to keep the kids off the iPad a bit. I use it too sometimes, and I occasionally read on it. I haven't found any major advantage to reading on the Kindle vs the iPad. I read on the iPad a lot and even though mine doesn't have the retina display, it's fine. My only complaint with the iPad is that with an Otterbox defender cover, it's heavy.
I HATE that POS Kindle--hate the weak battery life, the apps, navigating on it, and I'm sure there are other things about it I hate too. This is actually the 2nd Kindle we've had because the 1st one got sent back after 4 months when the screen went black for no reason. (When I looked up Kindle tech issues, this is apparently a common problem.) I wish I'd paid the extra for an iPad mini. When this Kindle dies, I will definitely replace it with something else non-Kindle.
