Standard practice with contracting work because there are too many dishonest people and neither side can trust the other.

So the contractor takes a deposit, starts working, then another payment, then another chunk of work, until the job is finished.

If you pay up front the contractor runs off with a larger sum. If you don't pay anything until the end the contractor can do the whole job and then get stiffed.

It doesn't work like that for tree work hoss. I have been on 4 different crews over the years and we got paid when the job was satisfactorily done, not before

Think about it, what the hell would you need a deposit on for a four hour job? They have a bunch of shite they can do if you cancel

We are talking about cutting down a tree, not fronting materials to build a house.
