On what basis? His resume is blank.

Sale - OL coach at McNeese
So you hand him the OLine job at a premier program coming from a 1-AA school?

Would be an interesting pick. No big school college experience, so recruiting would be a question mark. I posted in one of the CC board threads that he is only the 13th person to win a Superbowl as a player and a coach (in his case assistant OL coach) - which will be an icebreaker for many of our "3 and done" mindset recruits.
Very interesting he turned down USC job............for what ?

I like Mawae also. He is extremely well spoken, comes across as genuine and obviously has the NFL credibility. You never know, if he is successful perhaps he is the heir apparent to Les.

I agree with everyone in this thread...we need coaching. However, we can't forget about recruiting. We need serious help there in our borders. It's not much help if a guy can coach his arse off but can't recruit. I mean, it's nice seeing project players turned into NFL guys but those blue chip recruits will separate you from everyone due to their ceiling. Recruiting is every bit as important as coaching at LSU.

Didn't you know, Cameron, Mawae, and Frank Wilson are all the heir apparents to Miles.

Kevin Mawae?
What makes you think he would be a good coach? He was very good at the position but does not make you a great coach. Some of you are really delusional.
- LSU alum
- Went to Leesville, so he's familiar with the state and LSU's football ties
- Great college player, first team All-SEC and a member of LSU's Hall of Fame
- Great NFL player including six straight Pro Bowls
- Wealth of NFL experience, which is where every kid that signs at LSU wants to end up.
- Incredibly articulate and sharp, would be a great recruiter
- Served as president of the NFLPA for two terms, so he's privy to EVERYTHING that concerns players in once they become professionals
Mawae brings instantly credibility the day he takes the job because of what he's done. I know he doesn't have coaching experience (although he did unofficially help the team out this offseason), but you're a fool if you don't think he has great experience and insight into not only technique, but what it takes to be elite in college and the NFL. He's a guy I can see 18-22 year old linemen looking up to as a role model of the success they hope to achieve. Of course you see a blank resume and automatically question if he even belongs in the discussion, but some guys are worth the risk. Malzhan was a frickin high school coach and jumped right up to OC/WR coach at Arkansas and immediately started getting offers from other schools. Everyone needs a place to start, and while LSU is a big time job, I think Mawae would do very well.
Of course, all of this is conjecture and contingent on whether or not he actually WANTS to coach. From what I've heard, he does not want to coach at this time.

cool, let Mawae be a GA and work his way up.

"Rob Sale has never coached in college football"
You obviously know nothing about this man. He spent multiple years at Bama under Saban and has spent the last two years as the oline coach at McNesse. PS- Saban has invited him back the past two summers to work out potential oline recruits at camp. I would think he knows a little bit about football.

frick that. I'm with the guy that wants him to be Les' heir to the throne

Miles needs to do whatever to get Mile Sherman immediately. Hell of a recruiter and even better Oline coach. Sumlin is reaping the benefits of Shermans oline recruiting.

Frank is already coach in waiting.
Posted on 1/8/14 at 3:16 pm to ATLTiger
as long as it aint a former LSU O-Lineman

I see Mawae as a future AD more than HC.

One thing to keep an eye on is the finances surrounding this hire. Can LSU really afford to go out and hire a top-notch OL coach? Cameron's salary will basically double next year, and Adam Henry was rumored to be eyeing a return to the NFL. I'm sure a nice pay raise could keep him here.
