It has to be. I remember Robert Duvall saying it was the best movie he had seen in the last 25 years. That's pretty high praise from one of the best.

i loved the movie but i don't think mel gibson is why it's overlooked. it was almost like watching a documentary on life in the jungle. the subject matter and extreme violence probably doesn't appeal to most.
