I had a chunk break off and my dentist filled it like he was doing a filling pro bono. Depending on size missing and the rest of the tooth's shape you might just be able to do that. Or sign up for dental insurance and commit fruad. It's not like you need a check up to get it and can say pre-existing conditions were unknown.

got mine done at the LSUHSC and it cost a little under $1000

A crown at the dental school is $365. If you also need a root canal that could be anywhere from $95 to around $500 depending on which tooth.

Just don't expect top notch work. I'm not in clinic yet but I think we need less than 4 crowns to graduate. Good chance you're the students first time.

With the exception of cleanings and x-rays, what is dental insurance really good for anyway? Seems to exclude more things than it actually covers.

I pay right at $760 a year on dental insurance.

I have a family of 4. That's 8 cleanings a year at $115 each. .....I'm coming out ahead

Chunks,
Go apply for a care credit card. You can break up the payments for 6/12 months depending on the promotion; no interest.

I got a 7k line of credit and I wasn't even working so I think they will give it to anyone

You don't need insurance to get one.

You'll generally get a good job at the dental school, it will just take a lot longer. But in private practice, many dentists will cement a crown with crappy margins, and you won't know any better til a few years down the road when you get recurrent decay. At the dental school, if the margins aren't perfect when the instructor checks it, it ain't going in your mouth. The majority of teeth that need crowns don't need root canals. However, most teeth that need root canals also need crowns.

wut? No teeth is trashy/unhealthy and an implant is the cost of a decent used car.
