Fuel System Cleaning

I brought my car into have the oil changed and of course they say I need all kinds of stuff done. One thing they said was that my throttle body was really dirty and I needed a fuel system cleaning and it would be about $180. I've never had it done, my car has 63k miles. Is this something I should actually consider even though my car is running fine?

I have no warranty

Yeah, no. Run a can of Seafoam ($9) through the tank. Your fuel system will be fine.
Throttle body can get pretty dirty at times but can be cleaned with relative ease. Throttle body cleaner and a soft bristle toothbrush.
Edit: Redneck method with toothbrush

You run Seafoam through your vehicle regularly? Didn't know if this was something all cars should do.

I was thinking sea foam since he has no warranty. That stuff does wonders

A buddy of mine used to manage/run a tire and repair shop. He told me the most effective use of fuel cleaners (specifically Seafoam)is once every other tank. Obviously $20 a month on fuel cleaners is pretty ridiculous. I do however run a can through once every other month to keep things running smooth. I usually get an extra 1-2 mpg when I run it through the tank.

Considering I have measurable/quantifiable improvements to mpg, I wouldn't quite say placebo. And no, my driving habits are the same. I commute 120 miles a day via interstate with no traffic.

The gasoline you buy at the pump is typically around 10% ethanol, which is basically a fuel system cleaner in itself. Running sea foam or any other cleaner like that too often will actually do more damage because because you're adding a higher percentage of ethanol to your fuel.
If they were just changing the oil there was no way for them to actually see the inside of the throttle body. So unless they pulled your air intake off and looked...they're feeding you a load of crap.
That being said, if you have any kind of mechanical ability, you can clean the TB in less than 30min.

Ethanol has many bad properties, cleaning you pr fuel system is the complete opposite of what ethanol can do. In fact, it can damage fuel line, clog injectors, cause rust in tanks, etc...

A dirty throttle body can create a rough idle. But it's so easy to clean and one of those things you shouldn't have to pay to do. Most the time all you need is a screw driver to take the intake tube off then a good terry cloth and some intake cleaner. On my truck 2010 silverado it really did smooth the idle.

Seafoam wont do damage and isnt methanol based. its petro based.
Most vehicles over 50k miles will gain mpg by using. only needs done every 3mo.

Running no ethanol gas will probably get you same results and maybe cheaper.

Honestly, I have never seen any kind of fuel system cleaning do any good at all...any decent brand if fuel should have adequate detergents to keep things clean. There is no way I would pay someone a bunch of money to pour some "proprietary" cleaner into my tank. throttle bodies do get dirty, but I have never had that make the vehicle run badly. If you want to clean the throttle body, just buy a can of spray carb cleaner, remove the air cleaner, and spray it through the throttle body with the engine running....should cost about two bucks...
