The reporter said the conversation was off the record so he couldn't report on it then.
So if it was off the record, why can he report on it now?

Good for him.
He can walk away and not be the bad guy. Let Penn State folk fight amongst themselves and get his arse down to this new train wreck in Houston.
Glad it's not Lovie. I am just not impressed with defensive head coaches not named Bellichek. Now maybe Wade can stay. O'Brien being under Bellichek means maybe he is neither a 3-4 or 4-3 guy. Just a coach what you have guy until it does not work.
If Texans do hire him did they even talk to wade or Lovie? Rooney rule?? Hope they did so they don't hear shite about it.
Now Texans can talk about a QB

Schiano can get a better gig than that next year. It does pay really well, but you have crazy football-factory alumni/fans without a real chance to win.
They're going to machine-gun O'Brien out of town, making that job even less desirable.

Very good article. He's leaving that shithole in a much better place than he found it, and it's still a shithole.

I've never been up there, and don't know anything about the campus.
What's the big deal, besides all the pedophilia?

OK, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration. Still though, he held things together remarkably well.

And that's exactly why programs like Penn St and Texas are so fricking dysfunctional. They let one guy run the show for so long, he controls the program, does whatever he wants, becomes mediocre and they deal with it cause they get brainwashed.

good article but the writer still should have kept the off the record part off the record. The other quotes still paint the picture
Agreed, but this actually helps O'Brien by hitting home how dysfunctional the situation is at State College, without him having officially gone "on record" with much of what was printed.
He's now the good guy who was trying to help the PSU kids who stuck it out be competitive.

Texas has never let its football program run the university like Penn State did.
getting rid of a 15 year coach who won a NC is never easy. And lots of teams have had a hard time finding a replacement...a lot of it is timing.
And honestly Texas' refusal to put football first is a reason why they underperform their resources.

And why are people here taking O'Brien's word as the absolute truth? There are 2 sides to a story besides one guy bitterly complaining about these mysterious 'Paterno People'.
The University wholesale cut ties with the Paterno's/Paterno name(except the library for now).
Sounds like O'Brien bit off more than he can chew with the sanctions & was ready for an excuse to bolt back to the NFL anyway. Looks like a stepping stone for him.

Bit off more than he could chew? Lol
He's far exceeded expectations of even the most delusional penn state fan

Sugar , your opinions aren't worth crap after the stuff you were saying about a sick 90 year old woman on the poli board .... You're a pathetic individual

This. The guy doesn't need to fabricate a reason for leaving. He did a very good job navigating this program through some tough sanctions and now he's ready to take on a new challenge.

Do you really believe that the University told all of the pro-Paterno boosters to take their money and go root for another team?
