Got this one for Christmas. This is by far my favorite one in the series. There is so much to do! I was shocked at the overall size of the maps and the attention to detail in this one. Was playing last night and was just basically exploring looking for buried treasure. I do have one question though. Can anyone tell me how you switch between the different types of shot for your cannons on the naval missions?

it all has to do with where your camera is facing and whether or not you are holding R2.
facing front (holding R2) - chain shot
facingeither side (no R2) - Heavy shot
facing either side (R2) - regular cannon
facing behind (R2) - fire Barrel
holding L1 - Mortar

I'll lay it out for Xbone.
Hold Left bumper - mortar
Hold Left trigger - aims the broadside
Tapping right trigger - blindfires a volley of heavy shot
Aiming at the front - chain shot
Aiming at the back - fire barrels

The chase cannons only shoot the chain shot?

I need to work on those naval battle techniques. What is the point of building up your navy with those missions? Can you call them into battle?

So when I board a ship and recruit members it all for those?

Took so long to figure that out
listen. you better upgrade everything before attempting to take on a legendary ship.

no, after you take a ship, you have 3 options
Repair your ship - (becomes necessary ans part of strategy during some of the harder naval missions)
Lower your Wanted Level - (I never choose this)
Send to Kenway's Fleet - (i do this for some of the bigger ships and all Man-o-wars)

Yes, also the more guys on your crew the easier it is to board and take ships.

After advancing past a certain story mission you unlock the fleet. Early on the missions don't pay crap but by the end you are pulling in 5k on the last ones. And keep an eye on the level of ships you capture because higher level versions of ships have better speed and cargo storage but the game doesn't clue you in on that.

yea, i had a mostly upgraded ship, tried to take the one in the top left. got destroyed. havent tried since

Is there a cap on how many ships in my fleet? In other words should I reserve those spots for better ships?
Posted on 12/27/13 at 9:05 am to Mr Gardoki
You can increase the amount of ships stored, but it starts costing a lot of money for the last 5. What you can do is send ships to fleet and dismantle them for a fleet cash payout. But yes, reserve some spots for Man'O'Wars because they are the only ones with enough storage to complete the later missions.

I rolled into some port of call last night and a MF'N Spanish Man of War was sitting there broadside. With one salvo she obliterated my bitch arse ride.

i upgraded the hull first, then mortars, then regular cannons.
you have to be able to take punishment from the other ships, grind them down with mortars, then blast them down with regular cannons. it's a strategy i've found that works.
