My solution: the division leader with the 4th best record amongst divisions can be surpassed by a 3rd wild card team IF that wild card team has a better record.

You realize how close this puts your 08 Cardinals out of the playoffs, had that OT win over Dallas gone a different way?

Maybe they shouldnt have lost 31-7 to New Orleans

31-7 or 31-30, a loss is a loss, and that was earlier in the season before this team really started to gel. But you're right, a win there definitely helps us out. Sucks we also couldn't hold on to 11 point 4th qtr lead against St. Louis on the road in week 1.

if a college team goes undefeated and doesn't make the NC (from a power conference), then they might have a gripe...

but never in the NFL. there's always a game or two you should have won but didn't, and you're guaranteed your playoff shot if you're undefeated (it might be some interesting math to figure out the best possible record a 7th place team in the conference could have, with all 25 other teams as close to 0-16 as possible

Well you got a good point. My point is Arizona could be very deserving of the playoffs at 11-5 winning 8 of the their last 9, and that maybe Goodell should tweak the format just slightly. It's just unfortunate to play in such a difficult division with the current playoff format.

The Cardinals also hosted 2 playoff games as a 9-7 team their Super Bowl year, I don't sorry for them at all....some years the format works in your favor, some years it doesn't, no need to change it

You only feel that way because it affects your favorite team.

If this were a regularly occurring event, you would have a case that the system is broken and thus needs fixing. But it isn't and doesn't.

There are a few flaws, but for the most part the NFL playoff system is (IMHO) the best in sports. The entire system is very good. They do an excellent job of giving everybody a very level playing field.

When it comes down to it, teams need to win their division. No one should "try" to get a WC spot. It doesn't matter if you're in a division with SF and Seattle.. tough luck. Win more games. It is very clear-cut what you need to do to make the playoffs (vs College football where you can be perfect and miss it?)

Obviously. It sucks to see my team finish so well, but come up just short. But imagine if it were your team. I'm sure if it were San Fran or New England in Arizona's shoes, Goodell would be in his office as I type implementing a new format. Everyone but Cardinals fans could care less about them getting shorthanded. But wait until the Cards somehow win the division next year and it's Seattle getting shafted. Then something will happen. Look, I'm just saying the current format, IMO, has a slight flaw that can be fixed. It would reward deserving teams. Will it? I highly doubt it, but that's what this board's for - to talk about it.

How about you imagine the Cardinals winning their division and getting left out the playoffs.

Uhhh you mean like in 2008? When they went 11-5 and missed the playoffs?

As hard as it is to imagine. It could happen. But at least I know we would be missing the playoffs to a team with a better record. Compared to seeing a team like Dallas crawl their way in.

So, you're bitching because every game counts? Divisions would be pointless if it were any different.

He's bitching because the Cardinals wont make the playoffs. Nobody wants to watch Carson Palmer throw 5 interceptios in the first round.

Yeah, 2008. The year Brady got hurt and Cassel played which seems impressive that they still wound up 11-5. But I'm sure Goodell is plotting a way to keep the Cardinals out.

Cardinals have had a tougher schedule than any other team that has already qualified for the playoffs or is still eligible to make the playoffs this season, based on SOS published today by Pro-Football Reference. com.

Regardless of how Palmer played, at least our team didn't get annihilated by Russell Wilson and Seattle's D in Seattle like the Saints did.

Watching the Saints play on the road in the playoffs would be much worse than watching Palmer play.

I hope Tampa crushes the Saints this week.
