Lol.. the frick. The only way to get the ball back after half is to defer. Unless Bradie James decides to kick to open the game.
When a team wins the coin toss and defers, the other team then chooses to either kickoff or recieve to start the 1st half. The team that won the toss then decides whether or not they want to kickoff or recieve in the 2nd half. I dont think any team had ever deferred and elected to kickoff to start the 2nd half but it is an option.

I've seen teams kick off both halves before in bad weather with outstanding defenses. Both halves they got the ball on their opponents' side of the field

It use to be very common in the nfl for a team to receive if they won the coin toss.

Well your statement of

is false.
I am simply stating that I think most people think deferring automatically means the team is recieving the ball to start the 2nd half.

Why does deferring to the second half give you the a better chance at scoring before half in your scenario?
Scoring at the beginning of the first half and then again at the end of the half would have the same impact.

True story....
Last year local westlake high team defers opening kickoff...Iowa runs it back for a touchdown. Second half westlake kicks off again (turns out you defer to choose again in second half). They second half kickoff is taken back for another touchdown by Iowa. It was fricking hilarious.

It's true in the sense that any other way happens about as often as certain comets pass by.

That's not true. The people that don't know anything think teams select to kick after they win the toss to get the ball in the second half.
People that know about deferring know what deferring means.

setting yourself up to have the wind at your back in the fourth quarter may have the best statistical advantage.

Receiving the opening kickoff isn't as dumb as punting on 4th and 1 at your opponent's 40.

There's no bigger advantage in football than being able to score right before the half then getting the ball back after halftime and scoring again.
How does deferring until the 2nd half ensure that you are going to have the ball at the end of the first half?

If you receive the opening kickoff you get that possession in the first half. If you defer to the second half you get that possession in the second half. This doesn't change the amount of possessions you get, just when you get them. It's questionable as to whether or not it's better to receive or not; deferring sacrifices a better chance at scoring the first seven and putting the pressure on the opponent for a chance to score 14 consecutive points and put pressure on the opponent there.
The real advantage to deferring is that you get your possession in the second half with more data to inform your playcalling. Let's say that you were going to outscore your opponent by 10 in the 1st half, absent the kickoff possession. If you took the ball to start the game then you might pass more and run less than if you took it in the second half, giving your opponent a time of possession advantage compared to taking it in the second half and running more. Likewise if you were down by 10, you'd want to pass more to conserve clock.
Basically:
a) it's not dumb to take the opening kickoff
b) it is however still better to defer, but
c) it's dumb because you get more information for that drive by deferring not more points
