From what I understand, which admittedly is not very much, is that Alabama has promised to make Saban the highest paid coach in the country. Without an 'official' deal from Texas to be countered, they can not realistically make an offer that would fulfill this promise. Until Brown steps down, and Texas makes their offer known, Alabama can not put their own deal on the table.
If Texas goes big, Bama can't afford to match it.

I'm not so sure you are correct about that. Bama could match up to 8mil easily. And realistically, I don't see the numbers going over that.

The kind of 'big' that would keep Bama from being able to offer something comparable would have to be pretty astronomical. I guess it all depends on the validity, and continued existence, of Saban's much-talked-about debt.

I don't get this line of thinking. In a theoretical world where reason and common sense do not exist, yes, Texas could outspend us. Someone a while ago posted the revenue and profit numbers from 2011 or 2012, which showed that Alabama had something in the realm of $45m in profits to Texas' approximately $75m of profits. So, yes, Texas COULD outspend us, but it would take a literally insane amount of money to reach the point where Bama couldn't afford to match Texas' offer.
