How did this hit kill a deer?

Sorry no pics.
Took a quick shot that I immediately regretted taking. Went to take a look for blood and he was dead where I shot him (in tall grass right beside a pine thicket)
I hit him high and clipped the very last rib on the left side exiting behind the ribs on the right. I did not hit heart or lungs (obviously), somehow missed the stomach and was not high enough to hit the spine. As I said, he dropped where I shot, very little blood on the ground and what was there was very dark. Not sure how quickly he died but I saw no movement after the shot and he was dead when I got there (265 steps).
I assume I hit the liver but did not notice terrible damage to it. Maybe I hit the diaphragm and the main artery but I don't see how that would drop him immediately. Also, did not notice terrible bleeding when we cut him open.
Basically, looking at the shot I would have expected to trail him all night and probably lose him to the vultures.

I'd have to see it.

I got not idea. I actually almost had a heart attack myself when I walked up on him dead while i was looking for blood where I had shot. He was walking into the thicket and I just got a quick shot and thought I saw him jump into the pines.

Yeah, I should have taken a pic. I was too ashamed at the time because of how bad of a shot it was. Now, I wish I had taken a photo.

Could have hit his phrenic nerve, vagus nerve, or any other number of lucky shots.
Give me some backstrap and I'll do an autopsy for you.

Had to catch some part of the spine

This. All it would have taken was for a small fragment to break off when it hit the rib and deflect into the spine. Mammals are fragile critters.

So much energy/shock involved, you don't have to actually hit it.

was the exit from a deformed bullet or from a small non marred round?
the fluid of the "guts" stops bullets and absorbs a ton of energy.

Trauma to the spine likely.
I shot a small buck like that with a muzzeloader. Close range. Primer seemed to miss a split second then fired. Hit him WAY back no exit wound. Found bullet closer to his arse than his lungs with no damage to major organs and tiny amount of blood but fell where he stood.
Sometimes you just get lucky.

Aorta teach him how to take a real shot.

Prolly phrenic nerve
Couldn't breathe when it was hit

Exit wound was only slightly smaller than the entry wound. However, there was a wide spread of bruising (6-8") as compared to the 2" bruising around the entry wound.

As for the spine, it was a few inches below it. Did not notice any damage or bruising around it.

Gotta be vagus if he died instantly.
Posted on 11/25/13 at 4:47 pm to TigerDeacon
Transference of energy from the shot could have cause enough internal trauma to knock the deer out where such time passed that it died from its injuries.
