Was the cupboard really bare when Saban got here?

Absolutely not. I just get the impression that a lot of people here seem to think Saban built this program from scratch. He did do some great things but he knew that LSU was a sleeping giant. As a matter of fact, I believe that is actually a quote from him. I'll hang up and listen.

He had enough talent to be successful right away.
It was changing the mindset of the players and stop the flow of big time players going out of state that he turned around to allow LSU to compete nationally. Instead of those players going to Fla St (Warrick Dunn), Miami (Reggie Wayne, Ed Reed), Notre Dame, etc he kept them home and it made a big difference.

Actually Curley Hallman had the highest ranked recruiting class his last year, ranked #2 by most services. He recruited very well.

Saban had numerous players on his first few rosters that went on to the NFL courtesy of Dinardo. Saban gets too much credit. He does deserve credit for changing the mindset at LSU and improvement of facilities, though.
LSU made Saban a much as Saban made LSU.
The same can be said for Miles. I'm not sure there are many other programs where he could have been as successful as he has been at LSU.

Hallman did recruit well someone told me years ago that Hallman knew how to connect with the black athlete just couldn't coach worth a shite

Bingo Alatgr. Saban knew that he could win championships at LSU because everything was already basically in tact, just needed a little direction and tweaking.

Often times people think Saban took over a program that had been floundering in the cellar for years before his arrival. Not true.
About 14 months before Saban was hired LSU was the No. 6 ranked team in the country - and had been ranked in the top 25 for almost 30 consecutive weeks.
No doubt Dinardo's program nosedived his last season and a half here, but he had experienced some success before that.
Saban did a great job and brought LSU to the next level, but he had something to work with when he got here.

No one ever said Saban built this program from nothing when he was here, but he had no where near the talent and structure that Miles had coming in.
The team mindsets were total opposites. A talented team coming off 2 dismal seasons as compared to an extremely talented team coming off an NC and successful 9-3 season.
People put way to much stock in that bowl game loss when denigrating that 2004 season. The team was a top 10 team easily, but played with a ton of distractions at the coaching and player levels with Saban out the door basically.
LSU was a missed xp and bad rule call away from potentially playing in the SEC title game that year and beating #3 Auburn on the road.
All that said, Miles is a good coach, but not even within any type of discussion with coaches like Saban and Urban Meyer. He took over the best situation of all three of them and has had the least success.
