I asked her to pick up 5 boxes (20 rds each) of 7.62X39 and a box of cheap range 9mm. She comes back with 5 boxes of 7.62 at $8.99 a box and 20 rounds of hydra-shocks at $26

I had to run to Bass Pro Shops last night and buy all new ammo. Tul-Ammo has a nice 100 round box of 7.62 so the trip was worth it. About .25 per round which ain't horrible.

I'm assuming your wife hunts with you otherwise this was a pretty boneheaded move. I could understand asking her to pick some up if she was somewhat knowledgeable, but this would be like my wife sending me after some obscure makeup or tampons.

Last year at Christmas my wife told me she was sorry because she wanted to buy me some .22 ammo. I just laughed and felt sad at the same time.

Meh, tampons were easy, I just got the equivalent of 10 gage magnums.
At first she gave me a look like, "what are you trying to say?", but just said "thanks" (sarcastically). She used them, they worked, and she never asked me to buy her any more.

I wrote it down on a piece of paper and told her to hand it to the man behind the counter. She didn't do that and tried it on her own.

Never bothers me when I somehow end up with a cartridge for a gun I don't have. Just a good excuse to buy a different gun. "Lets see, I have this 20$ box of 30-30 but no levergun. only makes sense to buy a levergun."

Which leads to the inevitable conversation with your better half when you come home with a new gun. She asks why another one, and for once the response can be pushed back on her. "Honey, you bought me this ammo for a gun I don't have chambered for it, so I knew you must have wanted me to go get a new gun"

That's why I always send her with an old box label or send her pics. If it doesn't match completely she doesn't buy it.
