Non first round athletes leaving college early to go pro

Or maybe non second or third round for NFL,
Has to be one of the most mind numbingly confusing life decisions.
I've seen it with LSU football and NC State basketball. Either this is an epidemic in college sports or it is just a curse of my teams.
These guys were juniors last year and had second round grades at best. CJ and Zo went pro and cant even make a team. Is it really worth losing a degree to play in europe for a few years?
While the argument rages over paying college athletes, shouldnt they at least try to take advantage of their free education first before complaining?

How long would you stick with an unpaid internship?
A lot of times they come out to reasons that have nothing to do with draft stock

I think most of the time, or at least in football, the players are told their bodies only have so many years of life in them, and they would rather use those years playing to get paid instead of at the college level, and Im sure they always tell themselves they can go back and get their degree.
As far as basketball goes Idk why those guys who are borderline on even making a team would make the leap, maybe the same reason as a need for money now. Maybe they didn't think they could improve their draft stock enough, who knows.

Taking a big leap of faith thinking they were only one year's worth of courses from graduating. Plus they can make six figures overseas which is still a pretty good reason to leave.

the average person has a plan B or plan C if they don't do well in college.
Most athletes don't have a plan B, they live and breathe that sport so that's their only chance of getting paid big bucks and they take it.

No one likes playing for Mark Gottfried.

I've always thought this especially for basketball. In football if you go 1-4 rounds our in pretty good shape but sometimes it blows my mind when some of these guys go pro and they don't get drafted. Although it worked out for M.Ford and J.Ware (7th round I think)

"Improving oneself"? Most players will tell you that there is far more improvement by practicing & playing in the League you wish to make a career of.
It seems both fans & players are brainwashed into believing that they need College Athletics . Baseball players have basically shunned college for over a century & gone straight to the Pros.
I'm all for a player like Brandon Jennings skipping college & getting paid nicely to hone their skills professionally without worrying about classes/grades nor other college bs.
Kobe, KG,LeBron ,Bynum,McGrady,Rubio, Gasol Brothers,Nowitski,etc....never needed college & I am certain Shaq never needed LSU (as well as countless others) .

We had the same problem when Gottfried was coaching at Alabama. We had a lot of players leave early or transfer. The players were glad when he was finally fired.

Unfortunately some of those guys also have some folks around them filling their heads with "oh you'll get drafted higher" and shite like that. Daniel Orton is a good example of someone who should've stayed a year to get some PT (he was never going to play over Demarcus Cousins) but his Dad had him convinced he was better than Cousins and should leave early.

To be fair Orton sucked and might've ended up like J'Mison Morgan if he stayed. And he did get drafted in the 1st so it wasn't just his dad blowing smoke up his arse.

Until it was no longer in my best interest.
A lot of these guys are making poor decisions that negatively affect their earning potential.

I dunno. He wasn't that big of a headcase or anything, just a pain in the arse. Worst case he may have had to sit for grades though.

And is on his third team in about 3 years. He'd have been much better off coming back a year IMO.

He's bouncing around the NBA because he sucks and more time in college would've given scouts a better clue about that. If he was still there by 2011 Brow and them would've put him on the bench and destroyed his stock even more.

They can get their degree when euro ball is done. They can make decent money overseas as well.

LSU players leave early because they hate Miles and the program is sinking

Orton is the perfect example of why guys should leave early. Orton's been in the league for three years. It's clear he won't be there much longer, and probably time to start thinking about Plan B.
Guess what, though? He starts Plan B after having made $2.8 million. There was no guarantee of that type of money had he stayed at UK to get his degree.

Phil Pressey left Mizzou his junior year and didn't get drafted but signed a 3 year deal as a free agent with the Celtics. I guess it worked out for him.
