Why aren't student tickets free as they once were?

When I went to LSU in the 70's, all Full time students were allowed to attend each game for free and the student section started near mid field. Why can't this this be done again? Is it money like everything else? Thus certainly would fill up the stadium and make it lot lot louder.

Last part of your post.
Plus you're stupid.

Of course it's money. It was still only $7 a ticket when I went 10 years ago. And back then giving your student ticket to a non-student wasn't a hassle like it is now. So the student section stayed full for every game.

At some point, the amount of students, and more specifically, the amount of students who wanted tickets, grew, but the amount of student seats did not grow, or at least in proportion to the demand. So they implemented a lottery system or something shortly before I went to college. It was a little controversial, and there was some bitching (I know, I know—hard to believe Tiger fans would bitch about something), but it had to happen.
If LSU didn't charge for these tickets, you would have a number of students winning tickets in a lottery and never showing up. That would not be good. Charging a nominal $7 fee for each ticket was the solution. Only students who were willing to pay and therefore actually go to the game ebtered the lottery.

I was there a little before you. The tickets weren't free but part of the semester activity fee. Students just needed the ID to get in.

Your student fees covered the tickets. Is that not a valid solution again?

I think they were $3 a ticket when I attented back in the early/mid 90's.

Uhh our football program is not the same as it was in the 70s. We have Multi-million dollar salaries to pay for.

I forget what the fee was but you pre-paid for the season. So if you didn't go you forfeited part of that money, but it was very little per game. It could still work, if you've already paid it gives extra incentive to attend.

So the salaries for Les et al basically are paid by the students are you saying?

I don't think the University pays anywhere near all the coaches salaries. When I was there they did, but McClendon made something like $35K/year, which was more than the Chancellor.

Well sure, part of them, but at a very discounted rate compared to general admission.

Some of it I'm sure, added with hiked overall ticket prices, higher concession prices and paid parking.

If it was free, or if student fees covered the cost, For games such as Bama, 30,000 students would show up, for a game like Furman you would have maybe 10,000. Our fan base is feast or famine these days. If room was reserved for all 30,000 students the student section would be half empty for most games, thus resulting in more bitching on the tiger rant.

Season tickets were dirt cheap, free parking and no TAF fees. Maybe we should go back to those days, too?

Although the housing in the stadium sucked hard.....miss those days of simply walking from your room a few steps right into student section!

I doubt it has much to do with the money. In a lottery system, there is no barrier to entry. By asking a small fee, avid fans could guarantee they would get tickets. When I was a student, I would have protested any talk of moving back to the old system.
