what stands out to me with the front 7 is players being generally in the right place at the right time but whiffing, getting trucked, or getting juked. there has been a serious dropoff in talent and strength in the front 7.
the backfield has the tools. they just need time to get their sealegs. they're starting to getting tighter coverage and make plays.
I just can't recall an lsu defense getting clearly beaten physically and athletically. '08 was complete confusion but, they were still physical and fast. this front 7 is just plain soft. it's mystifying.

I did notice that one time when State got inside of our ten we went to a fifty look (no it wasn't goal line) featuring Hunter, Lacouture, Ferguson, Johnson, and either Rasco or Allen. It looked very effective for the three plays that we used it. Perhaps we need more beef up front to stop the run and get pressure. We really need to replace Welter; he just cannot get the job done.

And Neal also in rotation! He has tremendous upside with long arms and violent hands!

The 1 thing that scares me, is they look alot like the 2008 defense in the fact that they sit and watch while their teammate is making the tackle. There is no swarming at all! They finally go when they see their teammate struggling to tackle.

IMO the Defense was worse then it was against UGA for the most part. UGA just has a much better offense. Even in the second half, it was more to do with our offense getting a big lead forcing them to throw the ball more (which MSU obviously sucks at). Prescott was missing Wide open receivers. We have a long way to go. I do think we will get better, because Chavis is a great coach. We just need to start seeing it and seeing it quick.
This what I saw as well. Our defense got really good when state was down several scores and had to throw. Not negatigering (man that almost sounds racist lol), because I have a ton of faith in Chavis specifically, and this team in general. I don't care how we win. The defense has carried this team for years, so if it's now the offense's turn to carry a greater share of the load, so be it. I think the defense can be "good enough" with this offense for us to win the rest of our games.

It was a 12 point game after the first play of the 4th quarter. Not a huge lead with the way the defense has been playing. 4 plays later it was a 19 point game because the defense started playing better.
Less than half the yards MSU gained came in the second half. And 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter came after two turnovers and a turnover on downs.
They may not be playing stellar defense, but there was marked improvement from the first half to the second half that wasn't just because of the offense.

Missed tackles were definitely a problem last week. That's one area this D needs to focus on this week is wrapping up and hitting low.
I couldn't agree more!!! I was screaming at the TV watching all the missed tackles. To me, that's the biggest area in need of improvement.

stupid ncaa. If they would have gotten their shite together RR would have been on campus early and would have gotten the time he needed and would have been starting

I agree that White and Robinson are our soon-to-be lock down corners
I think you'll see that Mills will continue to get the toughest assignments. The two freshman look very good, and might push Mills for top dog next year. Other than that, I thought you were spot on. We need Beckwith to get it figured out.

There were some spots where the defense improved a bit in th 2nd half, but let's also be realistic, MSU's QBs helped out by being late on a few passes (the wheel route that Martin knocked away) and badly missing a few wide open WRs (White's INT). The defense may not have been so bad but for the god-awful tackling. We just finished game 6, tackling shouldn't be that much of an issue.
After watching UGA, I think many put the blame on the LBs and secondary. However, this defense's problems start at the line. The DEs are almost non-existant (Watch Rasco in the last game, he was really bad) and the tackles are inconsistent. I don't think it's a stretch to say that this might be the worst LSU DL in over 10 years, and I just don't know how it can improve this year. Like the OP said, the one bright spot might be the young CBs. Hopefully the coaching staff can trust them in one-on-one situations going forward so that they can bring some extra guys (both pass and run blitzes) to help out the DL. That might be LSU's only shot of stringing together a few good defensive series here and there.

Defense still looks poorly coached. Yes I know, who am I to question the best defensive mind ever. Either no one understands the concept of a force player or contain player or they are not coached to do so. Either way, these are concepts that must translate from the practice field. Defensive ends are locked up with their buts facing the sidelines, corners are engaged with wide recievers and playing peek-a-boo instead of fighting through the outside arm to force the play inside. These aren't new concepts. It's called team defense and not I'm the super star that can make any play.
The defense looked better in the second half....but they were playing Mississippi State. Georgia, Alabama, and A&M all score on some of the plays that the defense "made". Balls were thrown way late to recievers that were open.

Where the hell has Ego been? He's been extremely quiet and went out of the game for at least a play or two.
And he's NFL material?
Freak had a better game, but still gets put on his arse too much.

I thought most of the guys actually looked like they might have been in the right places when they needed to be. During the UGA game the guys looked lost and confused. That was more concerning to me than the tackling. I feel more confident that they will do a better job wrapping up and tackling than I would have had they still showed confusion on assignments and where they should be on defense.
It was concerning they let the QB run around a good bit. I really don't know what the cause of that was this past weekend, but that isn't good when we play teams like UF and A&M in the near future.
