But you didn't say like
You said Dave Matthews was better than The Grateful Dead
Like objectively better
Which is laughable
Using the word "objective" in the same sentence as "music" is laughable.*

I can say with confidence that the Grateful Dead is objectively better than Dave Matthews

They are awful live. He can't hit any of the notes from the album.
I'll state again that this is completely incorrect. He can definitely definitely hit all the notes.

I'm not a huge huge fan of live albums generally. But if it sounds good to you blast away,
Live is the true test of a bands talent. It's easy to sound perfect when you can cut and paste with unlimited takes. A talented band sounds perfect with only one take in front of a crowd with lights blinding them

A person doesn't have to think that everything that he doesn't like sucks. That's a pretty closed minded view of the world.

You can say it with as much confidence as you like. Or as often as you. Nonsense, it will remain.

I'm sorry, can you point out where I made a statement that music is objective? TIA

There's a lot of bands that want a super slick sounding over produced record.
That's true but then those bands sound slick and overproduced. They can't be that good of musicians if they need a heavy production to sound good.

You said Dave was way way better than the Dead. That's an objective statement is it not?

I don't disagree with this. But why doesn't it sound good in studios?
Oh right, the pulse of the crowd is missing. My mistake.

Dave Matthews is way better than the dead. Way way way better. The only way you could argue that the dead were better is if you completely disregarded the songs that are on the albums and judged the merits of a band exclusively on live performances.
There ya go. Sure you didn't use the word objective but you damn sure stated it as fact

It was emphatic (because I don't think much of the dead), but it was most certainly just my personal opinion.

It is unquestionably a fact that I prefer Dave Matthews over The Grateful Dead.

I'm not exactly sure you're disagreeing with what I'm saying. But then again, I'm not exactly sure what you're saying. What do you mean "capturing a good live sound"? It's not about capturing a live sound. It's about producing a great song within the confines of a studio.
And, again, a band that is worth their weight in dogshit can do this.
Not necessarily. There are plenty of very talented bands that sound overproduced in the studio. They don't have the same spontaneity that they do live. Part of that I think is on the producer, maybe all of it. But there are lots of examples of great musicians that sound too confined, too regimented in the studio. Dave Matthews Band is a perfect example of this. They are great musicians (except Boyd) but they don't sound worth a shite in the studio.

That moment when Jerry Garcia belts out 'Wish I was a headlight on a northbound train" and the crowd roars and the lights fly over the crowd. Or the crescendo out of Morning Dew. Or the call and response clapping with the audience at the end of Not Fade Away. Those are the moments of magic that no other band will ever recreate.
I'll never forget my first Dead show. I was amazed at how the crowd ROARED from the time they left the stage until they walked out for the encore.

quote:I'll take a shot. IMO the reason that the studio albums are less impressive is because they are watered down, shorter versions of the songs and intended to appeal to the masses which typically don't enjoy 8-9 minutes jams. Everyone who likes those bands and goes to see those shows do like that because that's what the bands are really good at and know to listen to the live stuff. I love American Beauty and some other studio Dead albums, but if I'm going to sit down and blast some GD I'm not even thinking about those albums.
