So he has never heard of inflation?

Also...for those arguing that it's free - here's a factoid from the same article:
quote:
At the end of his career the typical college football player will be handed a piece of paper. A diploma? Man, I hope so. But the paper I have in mind is the bill these guys will owe for goods and services that weren't covered by their scholarship. The typical college football player will owe $3,222 when he's finished with school.
Anymore, players don't even get a scholarship. Not a full one, anyway. Not if they owe $3,222.
This is where lots (most?) of you scream at me that $3,222 is dirt cheap for four or five years of college, nothing compared to what the rest of us are paying. First, don't scream at me. Second, I know that. I have two sons in high school planning to go to a public university in Ohio, where the average cost will be $20,000. Annually. For each. That's a total of $160,000 -- payable by: me -- so I'm painfully aware that $3,222 is dirt cheap.
I'm also aware of this: Nobody is going to pay $705 -- or $90, or $1 -- to park their car and watch my kids. Nobody will buy a ticket, jersey or hot dog because of my kids. My kids? Your kids? Unless they're part of college football's billion-dollar machine, our kids have nothing to do with this debate.

The minor league would be pretty small and honestly most of the players would be getting such a small amount they'd rather go get a free education.
Until a minor league system happens all we can do is speculate on how big or small it would be... i know one thing, players would make more than they are now in the ncaa system and would be free to negotiate endorsement contracts with companies.

Fair enough. Intriguing idea for sure. NFL is probably happy with the set up now.

Did you read the article? He accounted for inflation. Even with inflation thrown into the equation, Bob Stoops is making 31 times as much money as Bud Wilkinson did in 1950.

He pretends as if the only source of money is football.
What about the undergrad and graduate researchers who bring in million dollar research grants?
More to school than just athletics.

College football is the minor leagues. How many minor leaguers go on to play in the big leagues? Statistically very few. The same is true for college football players who go on to play in the NFL.

CFB is not the minor leagues. Minor leagues are pro athletes.

How many undergrad and graduate researches participate in a multi-billion dollar industry? That's billion with a B.

CFB is a farm system for the NFL. If you deny this then you are lying to yourself.

I admittedly didn't. Just read the paragraph. FWIW, I think athletes should get more money than they're getting now. They should all get enough to cover all costs of college and then some. But they shouldn't be paid much more than that. It's pathetic that some athletes owe even a cent to the school after their 4 years are up.

Whats your brilliant idea on how to pay them?
Posted on 9/25/13 at 2:47 pm to RollTide1987
Not denying it's a farm system. But it's not the same as the minor leagues. At all.

The only difference is CFB players don't get paid a salary.

Set a minimum salary and go from there. I don't see how that would be difficult.
