Does Peyton Manning's Regular Season Greatness even Matter anymore?

He's been great for almost all of his career. Its only about the Ring now for him. Last year ended in a disappointing fashion. It doesn't matter what ridiculous numbers he puts up, might as well give him another MVP trophy now, all that doesn't matter. The only time he won a ring was when his D carried the team that post season. I'm just tired of the hoopla when its all irrelevant. Not a knock on peyton cause he's playing great but that's all nothing new.

Going from 5 yard lobs in the backyard with Cooper to this is arguably the greatest sports story of our era.

he's won of the top 2 QBs to ever play in the NFL. It would be very hard for anything he does to change that (positively or negatively).

Honestly, it's gonna depend on what Tom Brady does to finish his career. Fair or not, these two will be forever linked in debate as contemporaries.
If Brady finishes with another 2-3 titles and Manning remains stuck on 1, I do think Brady will end up with a greater lasting legacy.

I thought it was odd that there was a lot of talk before Super Bowl XLIV about how he could become the greatest of all time with a win.
Why would he all of a sudden become the greatest of all time with that win?
I think Manning is one of the best regular season quarterbacks of all time, and does deserve to be in the conversation of best to ever play, but not close to greatest of all time.

No. Peyton is the greatest regular season QB of all-time even though Brady had the all time greatest regular season.
They changed the rules to accommodate these ridiculous offensive numbers anyway.

Not close? I'd say he's already pretty damn close, if not the GOAT.

Regular season GOAT.
Him and Marino had some of the best regular seasons ever.
But there's reg. season football and playoff football.
Especially in today's league when rookies who sucked in college can step right in the NFL and start...unlike long apprenticeships in the past...
It's all about the ring.
New rules have made the NFL regular season a joke...it's all grab-arse.
Playoffs is the last bastion where the refs somewhat still let them play like they did in the 80's -
Unless you went up against Lawrence Taylor, the Bears and Reggie White etc...you aren't the GOAT. That and the rings - will always put Montana over on Marino or Manning.

You don't think coming back off of the multiple neck surgeries at his age and out performing his rival to this extent add to his legacy even a little bit? He's on pace for the greatest season of all time currently. He'll probably slow down, but it's still remarkable given the circumstances

one question... does marino always get brought up when discussing top nfl qbs of all time? yes.. and he never even won a bowl. you have to have a defense to win a superbowl, tom brady would had NEVER won one without those good patriots defenses. Where has he been since? left sitting on the field crying. In bradys BEST yr ever in his career and one of best seasons ever in nfl history... he still couldnt get it done, even with the most high powered offense we have seen. you have to have that defense. its a team game, one man cant win in the nfl.

One of brett favre's best seasons came when he was a viking in old age. What did that add to his legacy? Not much IMO, he didn't get the job done.

Context is desperately needed for his playoffs. His post-season passer rating is higher than Brady's despite his regular season passer rating being lower, btw. Brady won 3 super bowls when he was not an elite QB. He has not won any since becoming elite. It is a TEAM sport. It takes the entire team and good coaching to win it all. Manning is one person. He cannot block for himself, catch his passes, kick field goals (frick you, Vanderjagt), or play defense. Vanderjagt cost him a few playoff games. The defense definitely cost them some playoff games. And Jim Caldwell's terrible coaching cost them the super bowl as well as the playoff game against the Jets in 2010.
Manning has the record for most 90+ passer rating playoff games with no turnovers that resulted in a loss. Why? Because the team around him has usually been not very good. The Colts went 2-14 as soon as he was no longer playing, the same team he took to the playoffs the previous year.
The Broncos should have beaten the Ravens last year. There was a blatant pass interference not called when Manning threw a pick 6 in the first half. Decker's arm was clearly yanked down before the ball got there, causing the ball to go through his hands untouched and land in the defender's hands. Then there was the ridiculous 80 yard bomb that tied the game. Those sorts of things never seem to happen to Brady. It certainly didn't happen to Montana, who had a top 5 defense every year he won the championship and a hall of fame coach that revolutionized the game of football.
Vanderjagt missed a 40 yard field goal to tie the game late in the fourth quarter in 2005. The Colts defense allowed Billy Volek to lead the Chargers to a game winning drive in 2007 or 2008 (Rivers and Tomlinson were both hurt). Peyton took the lead with less than a minute to go against the Jets in 2010, and the Jets returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards, then completed a pass, then Jim Caldwell inexplicably called a timeout, then Sanchez threw a 20 yard pass, and the Jets kicked a field goal to win as time expired. How any of these losses are on Peyton is beyond me. Yet he is someone called only a regular season champion. He has the record for the biggest comeback in an AFC or NFC championship game when he came back from down 18 to beat the Patriots in 2006. He had a perfect passer rating in a playoff game in 2003 ended up losing to the Pats in the championship game when they illegally mugged the receivers every single play, leading the stricter enforcement of the no contact beyond 5 yards rules that was totally ignored in that playoff game. I could go on and on. But all these lazy commentators want to focus on is the playoff record and the fact that he has only 1 super bowl.
So to base his legacy on how many rings he has is lazy analysis. It is not tennis.

The SEC was more physical when Manning played than the NFL today.
It's a pussy league...basketball on grass...can't touch the golden child...can't touch receivers...can't tackle high, can't tackle low...DON'T TOUCH league.
Brady and Manning are the debate for best of their generation...but not all-time.
I'm not putting any QB from this era...when 19 of the Top 25 QB passer rating leaders all started after 1999 and were some of the busts and bums of the league...atop any all-time ranking.
Just like today's Baylor isn't the greatest offense of all time.
Context matters...rules matter...quality of defenses matter...
QBs are stepping into this league from day 1 and chucking the ball around with tremendous success.
Favre would skip training camp and just show up and led his team to the NFC champ game as an old man.
You don't need to be a full QB anymore - Arena style.

You are right. Peyton should have prevented that 80 yard bomb last year. Peyton should have made those field goals in previous years. Peyton should have tackled the return man against the Jets in 2010.
Sorry for the facts. I'll stick to just looking at his playoff record without any context whatsoever.

Dude i get shite happens that's out of his control but doesn't mean he still lost the damn. There's always something more he could have done better to possibly prevent something. And i'd be damned, you are sitting here taking credit away from him for his super bowl win, he should only get 1/3 credit for that win cause defense was 2/3 that post season.
