Question for Georgia Fans--My First Trip to Athens

Good Evening,
I live in Atlanta now and will be headed to the game with my family! We are all excited for our first roadtrip to Athens.
If any Georgia or LSU fans that know could answer the following questions I would be grateful.
1) Where is the best place to park? Will be headed back to Atlanta right after the game. Also we will not be tailgating--if that eliminates a few parking locations.
2) When would you leave Atlanta? We want time to explore Athens and campus before the game.
3) How hard would it be to eat lunch in downtown Athens? If so when would we need to get to a place? Any suggestions for lunch spots in downtown Athens.
Thank you so much!

For the game 7:00 am, for good ASAP.

Dont know about parking. Usually just parked at a friends place. Game is at 3:30. Id leave early if you want enough time to walk around and eat. I have never really had a problem getting anything to eat there. Sure it will be crowded, but that should be expected.

I'm doing the same thing and would be interested in the responses to your questions. But this is the wrong board. This post should be on the the SEC Rant.

You should leave 8:00 AM, 9:00 at the latest. I'm a student at UGA, my family came up for the SCar game around 10:00 am and had no problems, but you might as well enjoy as much of the day as you can. As a side note, if you live north of Atlanta closer to Duluth, I find that it is often faster on game days if you take 85 to Jefferson (exit 137) and come to over that way instead of dealing with 316. Really depends though.
There is UGA parking for $20 close-ish to the stadium in North Deck (right off broad on Jackson Street) or Carlton Street Deck by the the Stegeman basketball stadium. There is free parking (as I recall) at the IM fields, which will be closest to you if you come in off 316. This will require you to take a shuttle, however, if you don't feel like walking a mile or so. It will be tough to get out of town quickly wherever you park.
For lunch: Everywhere downtown will be crowded, so I would probably try to get to lunch by 11:30 or 12:00 at the latest. The good thing about Athens, however, is that there is no shortage of restaurants. The two major downtown streets (for restaurants anyway) are Broad and Clayton and you'll find all kinds of stuff (and all kinds of prices) along there. Fuzzy's is a personal favorite of mine, its a Tex-Mex type of thing, but very cool spot.
I hope that helps.

I went to Athens in 2009 and it was pretty cool. Visting seats were waaaaaaaay up high but concessions weren't that hard and sneaking Bourbon in was easy. Parking is the problem. Good luck. Oxford is only place worse.

Sure thing. I'm not sure what would be faster from Perimeter Center. 316 is definitely more of a straight shot, just depends on traffic.
By the way, here is a parking map: LINK for gameday. This actually says that a lot of the parking is free, which I did not realize, but then again it's not usually a concern of mine. North Deck on S Jackson will be your best bet location wise, though it will be crowded i'm sure (first come-first serve, you should be fine i think). That will be the most convenient if you want to see the cool parts of campus (ie, North Campus)and it's right by the downtown area.

Not really...
Most of the action is on campus tailgating. I've never had a problem walking right into a restaurant for lunch on a GameDay.

Fair enough. I don't do it often. Thanks for the tip.

We'll be staying in Madison. Do you think we'll be able to find taxi/shuttle to/from game?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but they need to leave as early as possible. If they're pulling into Athens at 11:00 it's gonna be a nightmare.
I imagine you're used to getting up early to tailgate, just head out of atl by 7 and be on the safe side.

Hmm Madison's a good 25-30 min drive. To be honest, I have no idea what it would be like trying to get a cab. Athens taxis are gonna be tied up before and after the game. There would probably be a Madison-based taxi service to take to Athens, but then there's getting back.

For a 3:30 game, this is probably true. A later game like South Carolina was gives you a lot more cushion early in the day.

My friends told me to go Stone Mountain Hwy from ATL.

And for goodness sake, don't get suckered in to going to The Grill. It's not that good.
Suggestions:
Burgers - Clocked (don't just go to Five Guys. Clocked is awesome)
Pizza - Transmetropolitan
Mexican/Tex Mex - Willy's as was already suggested (newer but really good)
Americana - Trappeze/Highwire Lounge (has tons of great beers)
Nicer Lunch - Last Resort
In my experience, it's not difficult to find a place to sit down for lunch on a GameDay. HOWEVER, after a game is the complete opposite. If you are trying to go to a sit-down dinner after the game, prepare yourself for a 1-1.5 hour wait.
