I think you can understand why when you have the reigning worst defense in history, and you watched LSU play Alabama last year, people would feel this way. This time it worked, and we're happy. But anyone who was confident in the decision must not have been a lifetime Saints fan. I can count on two hands in the 80s and 90s where we had the 49ers in a similar situation and we lost.

This is the dumbest thing I ever heard. "Having confidence in your coaches decision makes you not a real fan"

A lot of arguing going on about a decision that won us a division game to start the season.

negative. the field goal was the right call.
the time out was not. should have taken the 5 yards like someone else said.
A touchdown is a hard thing to get. If Atlanta had scored we get the ball with one timeout only needing another field goal.
Payton made the right call.

What the frick does this have to do with anything. Are the Atlanta Falcons secretly playing CFB as the crimson tide? GTFO. You cannot name one sound football reason it is the right call. We've already 1. Been stuffed on 4th and 2. Struggled on that side of the field.
Chances are against is scoring and we saw what the falcons did. March right down the field. They were in FG range almost instantly. You're lookin at OT when you could've had the damn game. There is also less pressure to score a TD and perhaps with a few more options, that's what they do.
Payton > LSU jock sniffer. PERIOD!

Surely, you do not mean me.

87% Win Rate whether you convert or not
This article bears out with actual statistics why we should have gone for it on the final 4th down.

Payton made 1 correct call and 1 bad call... or was it Brees that made the wrong call?
We SHOULD have kicked the field goal, we should have NEVER called the timeout.. /endthread
we are arguing over a decision that won us our first divisional game of the season, shame on all of you

We 100% won the game an the falcons would have 100% kicked a field goal to tie the game. I don't care what the statistics are league wide. In that game, getting the first or a TD was a 50/50 prop at best.
I can argue with statistics all day. I cannot argue with results.

"Which actually would have worked had they snapped it when Bierman leaned over"
You dont snap it there, you have the guy in front of him jump. But yeah it could have worked.

Nailed it

Going for the first would have been risky. The placement of the ball if we didn't get it, they could tie the game with a FG (which would have happened btw). No, force them into the red-zone where our defense always appears to play its best (even last year).

Our defense trying to keep a team out of the end zone....Vernon Davis recent enough for you?
Look--I'm happy it worked. But there are a lot of cases where it did not work and there are a lot of cases where it did work.

87% seals the deal, and, typically, the facts are on my side.
Many of the rebuttals here make no sense... they concede that Atlanta could have easily gone the 70 yards necessary to kick a long field goal but not 80 when a touchdown was necessary. And even then, the kicker would have had to split the uprights, the Saints would likely have had some time left to respond, and the worst case was overtime.
Like I said, the potential reward far outweighed the risks. Thank you for providing the link to prove it.

So if we didnt make it and the defense is playing lights out. We had 3 sacks.Defense may have gotten a sack in the end zone for a safety and Saints ball again to run the clock. All I know is we won a great game was very close to losing it

because they did

because they didn't. These are not what ifs, these things happened. The only what if, is whether or not we get the conversion and if one of the best kickers in the league can make an XP distance FG.
Additionally, I'm also left to wonder who would excercise better judgment in such a situation. On one hand there is a SB winning NFL coach with 6 years of experience under his belt. On the other, there is a weirdo who posts videos of himself dressed like a dog online. hmmmmm, tough call.
