Cabin in the Woods

I watched it with my son last night and...still I am not sure what to think. Seemed like a decent "deconstruction" of the horror genre. I told him we will have to watch Scream to see the master at work on that.
What were the board's thoughts?

As something new and original, I liked it. I'm also a big Joss Whedon fan after the Buffy series.

Question: how did they get that specific set of kids to go out to the cabin?

Loved it. The meaning tends to fly over people's heads so it doesn't get the love it deserves. The board seems to like it so that is encouraging.
Edit: Drugs and the cabin belonged to a "relative" if I remember correctly.

That this movie is a hell of a lot better than Scream

I think they are insinuating that there is always "that specific set of kids" going out to a cabin in the woods somewhere out there.

But presumably only that specific cabin is under that level of surveillance and control, no?

It appears as though every county seemed to have their own setup, but I think you are right.

It's a set-up by the people running that cabin, as that group of five was hand-picked.
There's a comment at the beginning of the movie about the cabin belonging to one's cousin and a follow-up line later in the movie saying "I don't think he even HAS a cousin."
This implies that they used some of the mind-altering drugs on one or more of the five students in order to plant the seed that lead to the trip to the cabin.

It was a phenomenal satire and still a pretty decent horror movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Was entertaining enough to where I would watch it again.

Here is another question. Did the sacrifices have to be the same. Fool, jock, virgin, slut, scholar?
Reason I ask is I'm pretty sure the Japanese were sacrificing a room full of female elementary kids.

Didn't they say that it was different in each culture?

Yea, each culture was different (I believe there were different gods too, but thy may be wrong).

I didn't think it was different gods. As long as one culture was successful the gods would not rise.

When The Director first appeared on screen, she says "[The ritual is] different in every culture, and it has changed over the years." By this statement, it is clear that the ritual needs different scenarios from each culture. The scenarios depend on what the culture's most famous horror formula is at the time. In the American culture, the most widely-accepted theme is for a group of college-aged people go out to a rural or even less-developed spot to cut loose in. In the Japanese culture, the horror formula most well-known to the audience is the angry (and usually) child-entity. The young schoolgirls defeated the entity, which is why the characters say "Japan has failed". Similar endings occurred in other countries that were quickly overwatched when the mass break-out was going on. All based on local cultures
