My 13 year old daughter has been learning guitar over the last year or so. She currently has a cheap model acoustic from Wal Mart but being as she is really improving and has stuck with it I would like to buy her a nicer guitar for Christmas. I know nothing about what to look for so could anybody on here maybe help me out. Not looking to spend more than $400 or so. Thanks in advance.

You in BR? Look on Craigslist for an acoustic in your price range
There are a ton of people trying to sell their acoustic they never play.

Craigslist
This, soooooo many people get a guitar and never play it more than a week. There's tons of used gear out there.

You can get a fantastic deal on Craigslist from some guy that has had a nice acoustic sitting in his living room just staring at him.

There are lots of good beginner acoustics that can be had for very little money. Something as simple as an entry level yamaha, fender, epiphone, etc. will give you pretty solid sound for south of $200.
Also, as mentioned, craigslist is a good place to look. Pawn Shops as well.

What would be some good brands to look for if I happen to find something on craiglist?

I bet I could play that like an angel on a harp.

Stay away from Guitar Center unless you want to get hustled and bad service to boot. Sweetwater.com has great deals on guitars at good prices.

Ive had my eye on this Martin DXK2AE for awhile. A little over your price range, but the one I've played at C&M sounds incredible. It's well worth the money. I also second the Taylor Mini's. Ive had one for years and it's a great value and sounds great as well. Smaller scale will be easier to play for a younger female.

watch Hello Music, they have daily deals.
All good suggestions here. I've always heard people recommend Seagulls for a nice mid-level guitar, but have never handled one.

Here is a nice looking Koa wood guitar. I think when you are on budget Dean guitars give you the best bang for your buck.
