headed out to scout a WMA this weekend. Can I carry a pistol?

I would assume you can since nothing is in season
Posted on 8/26/13 at 2:21 pm to Lil Man
No. From the regs:
quote:
Firearms and bows and arrows are not
allowed on WMAs during closed seasons
EXCEPT on designated shooting
ranges or as permitted for trapping,
and EXCEPT as allowed pursuant
to R.S. 56:109.C and R.S. 56:1691.
Bows and broadhead arrows are not
allowed on WMAs EXCEPT during
deer archery season, turkey season or
as permitted for bowfishing. Active
and retired law enforcement officers in
compliance with POST requirements,
Federal Law Enforcement Officers
and holders of Louisiana concealed
handgun permits or permit holders
from a reciprocal state, who are in
compliance with all other state and
federal firearms regulations, may possess
firearms on WMAs, provided
these firearms are not used for any
hunting purpose.

I should add, during bow season it is legal to open carry a .22lr pistol loaded with RAT SHOT, only. Basically, so you can kill snakes with it.

Can you? I don't know. Would I? Yes I would

I called the state police office and they told me I could not carry a concealed firearm on WMA land. This was during hunting season and that may something to do with it. They advised me to unload the pistol and keep it off of my person. Not sure how much of that is law but I had a shotgun in my hands anyway so I wasn't overly butt hurt.

Also from the Regs
§1691. Possession of firearms
A person who lawfully possesses a firearm may possess or transport such firearm within the boundaries of a state park, state historic site, state preservation area, wildlife management area, or wildlife refuge.
So according to this you can.
Acts 2010, No. 790, §1.

I've open carried on WMA's & run across GJ a few times without any issues. Not saying it's legal but nothing was said.

You'll generally get more reliable info from LDWF than from State Police when it comes to regs for WMA's.

Wow talk about confusing wording

Not on a wma..... When nothing is in season......

Wouldn't possessing it in your vehicle be transporting it also? The statute does specifically separate the 2 by saying possessing or transporting. Because of this, I don't think they ony mean in a vehicle.
To the OP, just get in touch with LDWF and ask for the statute that says you can't. There have been 2 statutes posted here. The first says you can't except for certain things. In that it specifically states the statute I posted. I would give the statute number to them and let them try and disprove it. Don't just go off of what they say.

I agree with iwas. see law here New law 2010 This was written by Troy Hebert who has since been appointed as head of the ATC
It says nothing about permits. Only lawful possession, which is open carry. Even the rulebook added the exception of 2010 (in 2011 printing).
But I'm no lawyer

PUBLIC LANDS. Allows the possession of firearms on certain public lands. (8/15/10)

Adds wildlife management areas and wildlife refuges to places where a person can possess a firearm.

From Oct. 1 to Feb. 28, during open squirrel-rabbit season you can. Otherwise, no.
