Gun Ownership and Culture Shift in America

This is a very interesting article written by MAC on a new firearm blog he is a part of.
Winning battles but losing the war
I happen to disagree with him and think gun ownership is on an upturn since the sales of firearms have put all statistics to a record high. And although it seems sensationalistic and insensitive to the left to like guns (in the instances he points out in the article) it seems these things are happening in densely urban democratic areas. We are only hearing about them because they are where the media is - the northest or the west coast.
It was unfortunately sparked by the buying panic in December, but I think it's staggering how many brand new gun buyers there are. These people (the fence sitters) will hopefully become more accepting of the new tools they purchased and realize the real reason of 2A.
I also think the surge in gangs and gang activity is the biggest reason for the crime increase (EDIT: I should've said crime DENSITY). It's just that people want to attach emotion to an object and point the finger rather than address the ROOT CAUSE of violence in the first place. The lines become blurred when antis put a parallel between general crime rates (heavily influenced by gang activity) and mass shootings (while awful, extremely rare).
What says the OB? I would like to hear from older posters too - the older ones who could leave a rifle on his gun rack and go hunt after school.

I agree with that author in law we are winning but in the battle for the hearts and minds of people we are losing bad. MSNBC would make you think only crazies have guns. They never have a legit purpose in their eyes. frick those people

I live 1 mile from California, it is not good out here I have decided because I don't trust certain liberal friends that I would never disclose the types of guns, their location and the ammo associated with. I am not even telling my so what I have anymore and its all in a safe. People out here feel you should feel lucky to just have a 22 they want us all to go through bc checks etc its pretty f up, we are the fringes of society now

We your in a liberal play land in Tahoe. Go to south Nevada and they have great shooting and gun ranges. When I lived in pheonix,az it was awesome. One of the loosest states in the nation.

Nevada is a harsh gun owning state? I viewed them as being at least somewhat lax, maybe comparable to another midwest state.

I think that is accurate, and the author may be one of the reasons why. The vocal 2A extremists are the ones who are driving the middle away from the 2A cause. The guys who feel the need to walk around public places carrying AR-15s; The guys who incessantly shout gloom and doom about the sky falling, legislation and people coming to get your guns; the incessant inaccurate email forwards that i even get from MY MOTHER; all these things contribute to the majority sliding away from support of the 2A.
It's like hunting. If you took the Hunter Ed class, they tell you to not strap a deer to your hood and drive it around. Sure it is legal, but hunters are a minority, and we need to have a good public perception of our sport, so that the efforts of the nutjobs like PETA are thwarted.
The House is majority Republican, the Senate may be soon. No gun control bill will ever pass there, so why the constant screaming and worrying?

On the legal gun trade side, the same people keep buying more and more guns and the number of new gun owners is not growing.

I see women as our salvation. They are 50% of our population.
30 years ago, we had nearly zero% of women on our side. As men metrosexualized, the percentage of pro-gun males fell far below 50% of the total population.
Just as we're seeing +50% of college graduates being female and being more self-sufficient, we're beginning to see that self-sufficiency translate into physical protection, and thus into firearm ownership

Well, I guess I fit that role... I remember even bringing in a new gun in the elementary school I went to in the sticks and showing it (new410) to my buddies and the Principal..
Counting young women and many sig. others, there are probably "more new" gun owners than before,, but I would be willing to bet that most of the "record sales" that were set recently were by me, you, and everyone like us.. I bought guns just because the president said he didn't want me to have them,,, In other words, I think the records were set by us..

This kind of ignorance is why the rest of us have stay focused and vocal. Maybe it should occur to you that those who incessantly shout doom and gloom is doing so because the anti-gun side is shouting nonsense and sending inaccurate emails as well. It should but I'm not holding out for you.

No surprise. When all your buddies shout "me too", you tend to forget that you are in the minority of the voting public.
Perhaps you can explain how a gun control bill passes when the House, or the Senate or the White House is controlled by Repubs? Hell even the Senate bill couldn't pass and it's majority Dem. Maybe go to YouTube and watch "I'm just a Bill" from Saturday morning cartoons to see how the process works.

Mung, the problem is that if we aren't vocal, we will have our rights torn from us like in 1994. I wasn't old enough to own a gun or anything then (I was 5 
) but from what I've read, gun owners thought they could trust their politicians. Not only were they wrong, but there was a 10 year setback on us getting our rights back. And since 2004 when the AWB ended, the crime rate has continued to drop.
I agree that a large group of open carriers not showing restraint and common sense and being too loud and boisterous does a lot to set us back.
The best way to get people on the fence to see gun ownership positively is to take them shooting and not force the issue. Once they see shooting is really fun and not scary (as long as safety rules are followed) it will give them a positive experience to reevaluate their beliefs. I think this is the best method.
