There's always steady of volume with BRK B. It will probably be back up in a few weeks. A little expensive for me however.

Are you saying you think the stock is overpriced?
Posted on 8/21/13 at 5:45 pm to LSUTOM07
No I'm not saying that at all. $80 a share is steep for the kind of trading I do. I'm sure it's worth every penny.
ETA: Price is $114. Not sure what I was looking at.

I have never understood this. How does the price of a stock affect the way you see your purchase? If the stock looks cheap and your returns are based on percentages, why does it matter if you own 10 shares at $200 a share or 200 shares at $10 a share?
Posted on 8/21/13 at 7:59 pm to LSUTOM07
I mentioned them in other threads but AAPL and BP are the ones I'm following most closely. I am heavy into aapl right now and will likely sell over next 3-4% increase. BP just seems way too low. I'd rather not touch a O&G stock due to my job in the O&G sector. Just getting too tempting...

The only reasonable explanation would be that he wanted to buy in lots of 100 so he could write covered calls, but I imagine someone asking random strangers on the Internet for stock tips would only be doing it due to a false sense of wealth associated with owning 1000 shares of a penny stock.

First of all dip shite I am not asking for stock tips. This thread is nothing more than a casual conversation about speculative stocks.
Anyways, I say BRK B is expensive and is not favorable for me in terms of volatility as I only play with around 5k. If I were to buy BRK B at 114 I wouldn't be able to afford fifty shares and it is likely it will stay below the 120 mark for the foreseeable future.
However with a cheap stock, KOG for instance, I bought at 7.50 and was able to buy hundreds of shares so when it rebounded to 9.50 I was able to clear over 1200 off of my small 5k gamble.
I don't trade much cash so I look for cheap and volatile. Not expensive and static. Hope this cleared things up.

First of all, the amount of shares is irrelevant. Just because something is "expensive" doesn't mean you won't get volatility. Look at AAPL, probably the most followed stock in the world, just in the last few years has gone from less than 200 to around 700 and back to 400. There may be a correlation between cheap stocks and volatility but it mainly can be attributed to the companies being generally shitty.

So you'll lose 1200 just as quickly. I bought BRK.B for $74 two years ago so I am now sitting on a 55% return and took half the risk.

All clear, hombre. Didn't mean to rustle any jimmies. I just think its sad when people come on here asking for stock tips and some clown, like Baylor or Rivers, "helps" them out and they lose their arse.

Right, in my original response I did not mention anything about volatility. The price in relation to the lack of significant short-term volatility is the reason I am not interested. Not the price in it's self.

That's a solid buy. Nice buy and hold. I was just saying with my trading strategy I don't want to hold longer than a month or two. It took Brk.B 2 years to reach that price. I'm looking for short term trades.

If anybody bought bit coin or ZYNGA due to an OT money board recommendation then they had it coming to them.
The poster that mentioned AMRN however did have an interesting stock which I would like to know more about assuming they actually know anything about it.

Yeah I haven't been watching it but it look like a good time to sell. I don't think there's any short term growth. You bought at 7.75?
Came out to be 19.5 % I think. Bought at low 8.00's (8.13 maybe? I don't remember exactly and can't look atm) back in April. Sold at 10.96. Wasn't a bad turnaround. Put that into Briggs and Stratton. Going to try to sell that at around 22-23ish if I'm lucky in the next year or so. Could make for another decent return.
BGG @ 19.06 & TASR @ 8.93. Higher than I though.

I have been watching AMRN. I've read it is likely to get up past 6.25 soon. What do you think?
Yes.

Dabbling with bipharms is not my cup of tea...
...but apparently "AMR101" is the cardiovascular disease fatty-acid that AMRN is backing. Is this the grounds for your interest? Does it concern you that this co. may not turn profits for years to come?
Why are you so confident in what they are doing at Amarin?

I use "gambling" money if you will and mess with biotechs. I mentioned AMRN as a buy back when it was $11, never owned it however, and watched it fall further and further until I could not resist. I was averaged in at 5.65 and sold most, but not all, of my position today. I like to take profits when I can in biotechs and let the rest ride.
Vascepa is slowly gaining market share against Lovaza. Vascepa is a superior drug and could become a couple billion dollar drug. They have several key dates coming up for its MARINE and ANCHOR traisl, one with ADCOM in October, one with PDUFA in December. They also could gain NCE any month now from the FDA.
I could still see a buyout in the future, but if not, go it alone may not be that bad either. Like you said, may take a year or two to really start turning profits.
Scripts and refill information can be found here
On the flipside, there is always a chance of dilution, as what happened a few months back.

Just bought HOV. I'm hoping that housing is back.
Still watching BP.

Google seems to have a lot of things in their back pocket for long term attractiveness. I'm beginning to see them as the 21st century GE. I may purchase whenever my current sell orders are processed.

How much did you buy if you don't mind me asking?
Posted on 9/7/13 at 12:26 am to Mootsman
1500 shares. I usually buy 1000 shares, but at this price I buy more. I did the same for MHR @3.50 (now $5.55) and FMFC Bank @$3.65 (now $16 plus). Bought Southwest Airlines 6000 shares at $8.60.
