Not to mention they millions of merchandise they have with a white Batman everywhere. Every t-shirt at Wally World and target, every kids plastic cup, action figure, video game, etc. already on the market becomes obsolete if Batman is made black, WB isn't going to do that.

I guess it's better than Johnny Depp pulling his tired act and getting the part.

My take on this.
I find Idris Elba to be a great actor. I'd love for him to play a superhero or hero in general. He has the look and he has the pull that's necessary. If someone wants to make him Black Panther or Luke Cage, I'm all in as long as its a quality product around him.
However, I don't want to see him in this role. For me, certain characters are so ingrained as a certain race or a certain look that I'd rather a lesser talented actor who has the look play them then a better actor who doesn't mesh with my outlook on what that character should look like.
In my mind, Batman should be a white male in his 30's with darker hair, who can pull off the pretty playboy genius while also having that darker silent angry side that comes out when he kicks someone's arse when necessary. That's the image I get off when I think of Batman and that's the image I believe most people get and want to see on screen.
As for minor roles being changed some. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I don't mind Elba being a black Heimdall. I don't have this strong prior connection with the character that he has to look a certain way. Heimdall was only in a couple of scenes in Thor and his role didn't make or break the movie or the story. Same with SLJ as Nick Fury. For most people, SLJ is Nick Fury.
I don't mind minor character's having their race changed as long as it does solely for the race of increasing the quality of the final product rather than making a statement or pandering to a demographic.

Yep. And Marvel would be affected by it as well since they are part of the comic book movie industry and have to share in the public perception of the genre and industry as a whole with WB.

No it would be because shes African. That has a lot to do with her character. After thinking about batman being from a rich family and settlers and all of that I agree being white has a lot to do with the character. I don't think a character needs to stay white or black just because. Look at the example you used earlier with nick fury. When they changed him to being black it was fine. I understand at that point he wasn't as big a character as he is now because of the movies but I think you can make him white now and it wouldn't affect the character much or at all.

Most Norwegians do. They don't like the idea of having one of their gods be black. The country is about 99% white so that is kinda weird.

Not in the continuity they have going on now. Maybe if they plan on rebooting the character at a latter point or SLJ moves on, but even then, there are several good black actors that could step right in for SLJ and keep the character going.
Like I said, for most people, SLJ is THE take on Nick Fury right now. Just like in most people's mind, Christian Bale is THE take Batman/Bruce Wayne.

I can see where that doesn't makesense considering they are all white.

Yep.
Minor and Side Characters, it's ok to do something like this with them because their source material is not as stringent and is pretty flexible. They aren't as important.
Trying to do something like this with core and legacy characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain America is insane and you are nothing more than some idiot trying to be PC and make a statement or pandering to a demographic.

Right. My point was he was changed from a white guy to a black guy in the comics and it didn't really matter. I really don't know what I was thinking saying batman could do that. Dumb on my part I admit. I think the classic characters can't be changed but others can as long as it doesn't hurt the character.

To be fair, The MCU borrowed heavily from the Utlimate Universe (if you case you didn't know). In the Ultimate Universe, Nick Fury was remade as black and his character looked like this:

the character redesign was around SLJ.

Yeah I know that. Was just saying they changed him and it wasn't a big deal.

wasn't sure you read comics. I know in the main line they switched to a "Nick Fury Jr." who happens to look just like black Fury and the OG Fury is MIA.To align this with the movies.
If major characters like Batman were changed to align it with the movie, there would be massive backlash.

Literally every high profile actor will be "attached" to this role by someone with "WB inside sources" at some point before it becomes official.

Rumor is Idris Elba could be the first black batman
Y'all know I only posted that rumor because of the above post I quoted right

I know, but the thread took a left turn and turned into a debate.

Idris Elba would rule as John Stewart in a JLA movie.

This dude just flat-out can't act. He's unbelievably bad; a talent black hole. The only time he's remotely palatable is when he's on the periphery being propped up by much stronger leads (e.g., Pirates/Depp; LoTR/everyone else), and Batman is the antithesis of this type of role (even with Supes present, as they would both be leads). Producers have figured this out, as evidenced by the fact that the guy pretty much hasn't done shite in years. The only way he gets a gig like Batman (where billions of dollars and a studio's entire fiscal year are at stake) is if he has JJ-type blackmail info on one of the producers--and even then, I would wager it doesn't happen.
