Was Morten Andersen really that good?

You tell me, i guess his numbers aren't all that impressive aside from 2 years as a saint, not caring too much what he did elsewhere. Did kicking statistics evolve from then to now like passing %'S?

I remember winning games just off his fgs. 15-14 or something like that. Happened often as I recall.

maybe that had to do with our great defense and a shitty offense.

not at all, i think his leg strength overcompensated a lack of great efficiency #'s.
Andersen as a Saint 77.6% FG
John Carney as a Saint 82.8% FG
Doug Brien as a Saint 82.6% FG
Hartley as a Saint 84.5% FG

If you asked any fan how a game was most likely to be won in that era I guarantee you the overwhelming majority would choose A:
A) Morten Anderson Field Goal
B) Running Touchdown
C) Defensive stand to protect lead
D) Bobby Hebert Touchdown Pass

i concede your point to a degree. With that said, 77.6% bro.

Further, there's only 2 kickers in our saints history that we had on roster for more than 2 years that Morten has a better FG% than and i've never heard of any of those two fricks.

if you go look at his stats a lot of the misses are from 45+
which considering the offense then isn't surprising

It's an interesting point, and I do wonder if the numbers were different in that era because we used to think of Anderson as automatic.

Exactly, I think he is still up there on the list for percentage of made FGs at long distance. Also, the fact that he was able to keep that consistency for such a long career (even if it was with the Falcons) is a pretty remarkable thing.
In short, yes.

that's my thing, i was shocked when i looked at his actual numbers in comparative to "what i recall as a kid", this dude was worshiped.

I'd take Hartley over him and Carney. I'll never forgive brian for hitting the field goal that kept us out the playoffs

I'm guessing they're right about the 45+ yarders being to blame. Anderson bailed the offense out countless times. He gets a pass in our mind for the misses because so many of them were from so far away.

He had a cannon for a leg and was a favorite of all Saints fans of that era. His Kickoffs were all high and deep and were at the time all we had to hang our hat as the rest of the team was piss poor till Mora arrived.

see i see this as being a bit hypocritical. you're talking about how much he's bailed us out but then we're also discussing about his shitty 45+ yd numbers being so bad bringing his % down... so he's getting crediting for bailing us out with 35-40 yd field goals? I mean he should be hitting that shite.
22/53 from 50+ as a saint

Morten played in an era where FG percentage was not as good as today.
Last season, Hartley was 81.8%. That was 22nd in the league.
81.8% in the 1980s woulsd be considered great. Now, it is horrible.

yeah trying to understand how kicking % has evolved over last 20 years. still a ball, a kicker, a field goal.
