John Wall, the foundation of the Washington Wizards’ rebuilding efforts for the past three years, has signed a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
According to a league source with knowledge of the situation, the deal is worth approximately $80 million over five years and will kick in at the start of the 2014-15 season. The agreement will keep the point guard within the Wizards organization through 2019, when Wall will be 28.

If the Wizards had waited until next summer, could they still have offered him the 5 year max or just the 4 year version?

Had to give him the 5 year before the season starts

I still don't know about $16m for him. For reference, Jrue Holiday is getting $11m

I think he's worth it. He's very talented and hasn't reached his peak yet. If he wasn't offered a max deal from the Wiz someone else would have.

The ceiling for Wall is much higher than Holiday. We saw glimpses of it last year.
Plus the Wizards have a damn good young back court right now, so they probably don't mind spending a little extra money to keep Wall in DC.

He has all the potential in the world, but he still can't shoot for shite. I don' know how I feel about a max contract for a guard who can't shoot. Now if he keeps improving his shot, he'll be clearly worth it.
Giving max deals over potential is pretty dangerous though
