Well thanks for the help. I like the ascend so far and its price range means I could buy two and keep the SO / kid happy.
I'll update when I make a purchase. Still lots of stuff to go over in this thread.
Thanks to everyone who's contributed. It's not often I feel like a noob.

If your budget is 500/ea check out the Ascend FS12T at BPS and the Perception Pescador 120 (2009 WS Tarpon 120 mold) at Academy for $499 also.
For $700 you can stand up with the Ascend FS128T, new platform from Ascend and great marsh boat. Search here, there are a couple of threads about it.
For a little more ($800-$900) check out the hybrids. The Native Ultimate 12 and Wilderness Systems Commander 120 (This is what I have- I love it).
Finally, if you go $8-900 and are dead set on a true SOT, Ride135 and dont look back.

This is what hobie owners say to justify the butthurt they feel for overpaying and pussing out of a little effort.
I guarantee i'll cover 3-4 times the amount of space in the marsh in my hobie outback (all while a rod n reel is in my hand,) then you can paddling... but I'm not gonna talk about you being but hurt about it.

After HOURS AND HOURS of research and flooding the OB with yak questions
The number one piece of advice I will give you is do not settle on one just to get it.
Look around, test, talk and look some more.

Good point. Pompano is virtually the same boat as the Pescador 120. Confluence Watersports owns WS and Perception (using their old Tarpon 120 mold for the pescador). They also sold that mold to West Marine, allowing them to create the Pompano 120 (sells for $499 but has no seat).
It is a toss up between the FS12T and Pescador/Pompano. The latter 2 are tried and true boats dating back a few years from the Tarpon 120. On the flip side, the Ascend seems to be a great boat too.

ETA: looks like the sale is over.

The problem I'm having fishing from my kayak is with my shoulder. The way you have to cast with your shoulder only has my rotator cuff killing me.

I have been having the same problem, my shoulder (and sometimes elbow) is usually fricked after a long trip.
I have been trying to keep it in the wrist, and if I make a full motion I try to make a wide swing and fully extend my arm horizontal to follow through.

If your shoulder hurts when you cast, try and side casting motion or get a rod with a very short base below the reel so you can keep it close to your body and it will be much much more comfortable.

Get a used Gheenoe and then you can stand and take a friend plus have room for beer. Slap a trolling motor or small HP motor (or both) and no more paddling.
I never have understood folks spending $1000 plus on a sit on top kayak when you can get a gheenoe for the same or cheaper. They can go in the same skinny water but they are actually comfortable to fish out of and have legit storage.

This is always why I shyed away from even considering them. Often times I paddle over flooded marsh grass, ponds with heavy submerged grass, run the bottom in shallow places. I can't think of one trip where I wouldn't have stripped the mirage system completely off the bottom.

You carry extra parts with you so you can make it back to the launch then brag about Hobie's outstanding warranty service.

You can pull the mirage drive cartidge out and paddle with the hole in it.
IIRC they also sell a plug to put in the hole if you dont want to use it as a urinal.
